“Back to Nature”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

We stayed in a self contained unit - as soon as you walked in, you were confronted with a bunk bed, a two seater couch, a small table and the kitchen. Heater, Grill, Microwave and DVS system (which came extremely handy) The bedroom had a double bed. Bed lights were positioned as if bunks were originally in the room. People had to go through the bedroom to get to the shower and toilet. Unit was essentially tidy. Outside was beautiful foliage, which my kids enjoyed building a hut from fallen branches and leaves. No view of Ruapehu from our unit, but a quick drive up to the mountain gave us the fix we needed.

Only gripe is that there was no mat to swipe our outside shoes with, so we kept trapsing in dead leaves and gravel. That ... and the weather! However, there was a hoover in the unit that we were able to use.

Check in was simple, and overall, everything was as expected and good value for money.

The campsites and cabins are nestled in pretty beech forest about 100 metres up the road from the fabulous Tongariro National Park visitor centre at Whakapapa. There are no views of the mountains but the beech forest is very pretty and a lovely fast flowing stream rushes down the southwest side of the site and can be accessed from a couple of short tracks (ie. 20 metres). A walk back out to the office reveals a view of Mt Ruapehu up the road and Mt Ngauruhoe can be seen by walking 300 metres down the road by the Chateau Hotel.

I received a nice welcome from a very friendly lady at the office then checked into my cabin for three nights. My intention was to do some varied day hikes but return to the comfort of a cabin for the night.

The kitchen and amenities blocks were very clean, well maintained and had everything you would expect from several 6 slice toasters, microwaves, stoves, fridges, internet, TV, etc.
Cell phones work just fine here too. If you did not feel like cooking, the Chateau Hotel has two restaurants - the Ruapehu Room which is quite expensive but nice and the Pihanga Cafe which is very reasonably priced and highly recommended. The Skotel has a restaurant and good value meals can be had from the pub (Tussock Bar). None of these are more than 300 metres away.

Cabins 1-3 have 4 single bunk beds and a double bed up in a mezzanine area. The rooms are carpeted, have a heater, table and 4 chairs, lighting and are just fine for a basic cabin.

I really like this place and will be returning.

Room Tip: Cabins 1-3 are down by the river opposite the lodge and it is peaceful and quiet there. No noise fro...

Whakapapa Holiday Park is not a large park, but it is in a very pretty location. It is only a 10 minute drive to the Whakapapa ski field and there are several lovely day walks in the National Park within a short walking or driving distance. The amenities were clean and ample, although a heater or two in the bathrooms would be nice. Internet access is patchy and expensive, but it is in a relatively isolated spot, so it's not surprising. The powered campervan sites are not huge but are set by a pretty stream. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here, more than we were expecting and are hoping to return one day soon.

Room Tip: Powered sites- you choose your site so it's a matter of first in, best dressed. Even so, all of...
