“Spectacular views from Meads Wall”
Reviewed April 1, 2013 via mobile

We went to Meads Wall in summer. This was one of the locations for LOTR movies. The view is absolutely stunning! You can oversee the valley from Ruapehu all the way to mount Tongariro. Great view of mount Doom. The 'wall' drops steep down right beneat your feet, awesome!

“Awesome first-time family day in the snow!”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

Our first experience in the snow with 2 teenagers and a 3yo in tow!
The staff were very helpful getting us organised. We hired our snow clothing back in Whakapapa so we could arrive ready, but decided to hire our equipment on the mountain rather than lugging it all up there as well (we lug enough stuff with 3 kids anyway!)
We decided on a 'Discover Package' for ourselves and the 2 teens, with 3 of us never having skied before. Great value package, the instructors were excellent and very patient. Within a couple of hours the kids were tearing down the mountain in the beginner area on snowboards like pros. Mum and Dad had to take turns looking after the 3yo (riding the toboggan) but got to have a good crack at skiing too. We were very happy with the Happy Valley beginner area for our day there. It offered everything we wanted. There is a café down there too when you need a break.
As part of our package we also got a scenic chairlift pass. We almost didn't go as we were tired after all the skiing, but thank goodness we did. What a view!! It was amazing just to ride the chairlifts that high up the mountain. The kids had a snowball fight in the abundant white powdery snow and we had a coffee/drink in the café at the top. A real highlight of the day and a lovely way to finish off before heading back down to the shuttle.
Note - make sure you take your cash/card and camera down to Happy Valley with you so you don't have to trudge back up/down the chairlift to the main building & lockers when you need them! Also, our 3yo could have free ski hire as part of our package. We didn't take up this offer but there were plenty of other little children skiing, many faster than us!

“Used as one of the locations for Mordor”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

We visited in high summer to see where they had filmed The Lord of the Rings battle that saw Sauron lose the one ring. It was also used for the location where Gollum first meets Frodo and Sam in the Emyn Muil. Very bleak and atmospheric. Having looked round the locations, we took the chairlift up to the cafe which, at 2020m, is the highest in NZ. Spectacular views, especially as it was fairly clear when were there and good coffee too.

Reviewed January 17, 2013

Like the atmosphere, but to enjoy a nice day skiing a bit steep.
Views are beautiful.
Parking good and sufficient car space.
