Skotel Alpine Resort

Great location for walkers, skiers or to just enjoy the scenery, Sit in the bar and watch the ever changing sky. An older style hotel/lodge that is unpretentious with happy friendly staff who seem to go out of their way to help. The rooms are basic and at times you hear the wood of the hotel creak but it adds to the ambiance. There are choices of accommodation to suit most budgets at this resort. Restaurant menu is varied and not overpriced. Breakfast buffet is good value. Sited at the start of many walking trails and close to the Village where you get shuttles to the Bruce or drive yourself up Mt Ruapehu. All in all great value with a real logde holiday sort of feel about it.

We stayed at the Skotel for two nights while doing the tongariro crossing. The room was good compared to the price you paid and the facilities worked very well. The food in the restaurant was very good and they also had an impressive wine list. The hotel sauna used a soup ladle as the sauna ladle. I seriously consider sending them one for christmas! The Skotel is a great place to stay if you plan to go skiing or explore the wonders of the national park. Worth every cent!

we spent only one night in this lovely hotel... what a pity. we would have loved to wake up again, open the curtains and let the sun + the lovely panorama into our room. nice receptionist, good restaurant service both for dinner and breakfast. if we go back to the tongariro region, we know where to stop by.

Room Tip: we had room 217. i suppose the 200+... corridor has the best view on the mountains.

Maybe we were lucky but our 3 day Grab-One stay at Skotel had no problems at all. Just out of season for skiers so plenty of space for an older couple to relax. Management and staff very obliging. Would go again - out of season....

Room Tip: Would ask for 'mountain views' (most rooms) - otherwise car park views are not as good.

My husband and I stayed at the Skotel and we found it just OK. Rooms were sparse and but had all the basic necessities. Our room overlooked a barren patch of grass and the wifi didn't reach it. Everything seemed a but run down but it was suitable for what it is--an inexpensive place to sleep before spending all day in the gorgeous outdoors.

I stayed at the Skotel for two nights and I loved it.
Room was warm and functional; the restaurant and the bar very confortable and the staff very friendly. Was so great after a great day of hiking to get nice diner and then drinks sitting close to fireplace at the bar.
The location is very close to the slopes; many hiking paths are located around the village and Scenic flight tours are available at just 5 minutes from there.

I and my husband stayed at Skotel for four days. The hotel is very nice and beautiful. The room is clean, warm and we could see Mt. Ngauruhoe from the window. The walls are too thin and at night was really hard sleep while the people was talking, watching TV, etc.
The food in the restaurant is good, but the pizza is not. The Gym at the hotel is a shame; all stuff is broken.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Skotel was established in the early 60s by a group of keen skiers who wanted the convenience of accommodation close to the ski-fields but more comfort than the ski lodges of that time. In 1986 it underwent a major expansion with the addition of restaurant, bar and other facilities. The old part of the building became the backpacker’s wing. Skotel has maintained its friendly informal atmosphere but now provides Qualmark three star accommodation and the exciting cuisine experiences of our new dinner menu. ... more   less
