Upon seeing pictures of the chateau, I immediately envisioned the national park lodges I have stayed at in the USA and Canada and how much I enjoyed those stays. The location and views mean as much as the accommodation itself. The chateau provided a level of service that would please even the most refined guests, such as high tea and a dress code in the restaurant. The sitting areas were elegant with great views, and the staff was friendly, helpful, and genuine. The rooms were very clean and everything worked. This is a historic building, so I always expect to see a certain amount of wear-and-tear that is near impossible to conceal, but that simply adds character.

Built in 1929 when the government wanted to get people up to the three volcanoes for skiing and natural park walks in Tongariro Natural Park. So many walks around the area and this is really the only place to stay.

Not sure why they went with chateau based architecture but they copied Lake Louise in Canada which also looks slightly out of place in that beautiful place!

Food is good and service when we were there was excellent. Plenty of walkers around so they cater for them by having cost effective clothes washing and drying facilities which we made use off and also a small cinema showing pretty recent films.

Come for the walks including the epic Tongariro Crossing approx 20km and a bus come to pick you up and drop you off at the chateau.

The hotel could do with a lick of paint and other investment and as it is now owned by an international hotel company you would think they would continue to invest as this place has so much history and deserves to be top quality.

I am in a wheelchair and requested and received a wheelchair access room. The website was great for giving me the information I needed and it was great to have a couple of options to choose from. The room was set up very well for a wheelchair and was clean and comfortable.

The portable ramps at the front of the hotel are tacky and tricky to use for a wheelchair. A more permanent, less awkward and aesthetic option should be looked at.

We only ate at the main restaurant which was nice atmosphere, good service et cetera. The other restaurant in the building had a horrible, bunker atmosphere and we avoided it after poking our nose in.

A hotel that portends and generally is classy to be classy should have a better, classier beer menu.

The bedrooms have been updated fairly recently but the bathrooms are sporting some pretty old fixtures, and common areas are showing their age. Had a lovely view of the mountains from our window. There aren’t a lot of options in the area so I’m not sure we could’ve done any better, but it needs some investment. Very convenient to a couple of local hikes.

I don’t even know where to start from, the room being dirty, the service being late or the personal being rude.
For two days we had dirty dishes (not even ours!!!) in front of our door and nobody bothered to clean. The room is dirty (especially the carpet) and there is absolutely nothing more than towels (no soap, toothbrush or else). Personal is at times rude, and a waitress even made fun of us after asking where we were from.
The hotel was probably good in the 80ies, but it seems that zero effort has been spent in maintenance since then and just after a few steps inside it becomes evident. Stay away.
