“Fantastic stay!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2014

Just had a fantastic weekend at this iconic hotel. We had stayed at Christmas when the hotel was full and the service suffered a little, however this time everything was perfect. We were greeted at reception by Brian who was professional but also very friendly. The suite was well appointed with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The standard of the high tea and breakfast was excellent and so were the wait staff. Would definitely stay here again!!

We travelled from Australia with our two young children so that I could run the Tussock Traverse. Very surprised to be upgraded from the motel units to a family room in the Chateau itself. Kids and husband had a few hours to kill whilst I competed in the event and were very entertained in the pool (which is like being in a submarine!) and the cinema. Would recommend if you can afford it. Otherwise stay close by and enjoy the high tea or bar.

Our complete experience in Tongariro national park was out of this world and the Chateau lived up to our expectations - what really set this place aside though for me was 2 things: the location and the staff. It's got an old-world grandeur if you're into that, and was the perfect base for hiking the crossing. We had such a lovely anniversary stay and they even upgraded our room! 10/10

We stayed in the 'historic' wing of the hotel, in a standard room. The place is spectacular, with fantastic views from our room, which was warm and cosy ready for our arrival. Sitting in the lounge is an experience in itself, very authentic feel (and genuinely authentic decor!).

We had dinner at the Ruapehu restaurant, which was a very good dinner. Be sure to book ahead of time for this though, as it can often get booked out. Breakfast the next morning was also fantastic. The cinema and pool are also a unique experience.

Past reviews give rather comflicting reviews and I want to clarify things for fellow travellers. This property is legend in NZ. A grand old lady indeed surrounded by some of the most stunning landscape this counrty has to over. Summer or winter, a trip to Whakapapa or National Park is never complete without at least popping into the Chateau Tongariro.
Our family picked the Chateau to celebrate our parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary. We stayed for 2 nights booking the celebration package (accommodation with dinner and breakfast, bottle of wine and chocolate). We brought golf clubs to enjoy the 9 hole course out front ($10 green fee pp) and ordered a cake in advance to be cut at afternoon tea upon arrival. Everything went without a hitch. Check in was fast and friendly, wait staff directed us to the privacy of the library for our afternoon tea, and at dinner Raj and Alida treated as like valued guests and provided excellent table service with good humor and professionalism. Breakfast was great value with hot and cold options although could be improved with a waffle station where guests could pour batter onto a waffle iron for a more US style of breakfast. Loved the juice machine and assortment of berries or vegetables available for juicing.
This hotel is not new. The rooms in the original wing are small and perhaps in need of a spruce up. Our room (109) was a "family room" with a queen bed and a single. It was quite dark with a single window atonce end. The bathroom not very modern. The bathtub was damaged and in need of repair. The shower head was very, very low. The rubber mat to prevent slips not the nicest to stand on...however this is a historic building and these things are easily forgiven. Other family members stayed in the new wing and enjoyed modern bathroom fittings, bigger rooms and a/c. If these amenities are important to you request a room here.
We all felt the hotel went out of its way to ensure we had an enjoyable time. Our parents were made to feel special, with complimentary wine provided for a toast at dinner and handmade chocolates for after, and all the dining staff were charming and enjoyed interacting with the guests.
My daughter swam in the basement pool (an experience she enjoyed because it is "different" and thought it warm and colourful. We enjoyed the movies we watched in our room. I didn't enquire about Internet however it is regrettable that complimentary wifi is not provided - at least in the reception or lounge area. We all enjoyed the free newspapers however.
Come with an open mind. Transport yourselves back to the 1930s and take in a high tea whilst listening to the piano. Enjoy a satisfying dinner in the formal lounge (with vegetarians well accommodated, just ask!) and mingle with guests from all over the globe. Read in the library or play a game of billiards. The experience is worth every cent in my humble opinion.

Room Tip: For modern amenities choose to stay in the new wing (better lighting, a/c, modern elevator, tv, bath...

We arrived at 5:30 expecting this to be a classy hotel. We were told that there was no space in either of the restaurants and that our only option was the pizza cafe (also owed by the hotel). This had a choice of 3 pizzas or 3 main courses, no starters and only ice cream for sweet. It was a casual eating place to be used atfer skiing. The village itself is very small and is basically the hotel, there appear to be no other places to eat in the evening.
This is not what you expect from a decent hotel and we were more than a little surprised. The rest of the hotel was fine but this attitude to guests is somewhat lacking in customer care (we don't have any space but there is a pizza place over the road).

Room Tip: Don't go here

Was so looking forward to taking my kids to this great kiwi icon. However, despite stunning weather and the hotel having such a great presence on the landscape our visit felt like we stayed at a 2 star motel.

On a recommendation from a friend we stayed at the family units (Bayview Fergusson Villas) which were tired, had mouldy windows and were expensive, but would have been perfect if they had been done up. Kids refused to stay in the first villa because 'it felt and smelled horrible'. Hotel was very accommodating and let us look at the rooms in the main hotel, which were lovely (although bathrooms seemed average) but they were at least another's $50-$100 more.

We finally settled on villa 6 which was the best of the bad bunch, had the best sun and view and beds were great...but room still tired and mouldy around the windows, and grossly overpriced.

Staff were lovely and very helpful, except those in the cafe on the outer side of the hotel (can't remember the name of it) where we had dinner. The two staff on that night can only be described as idiots and completely uninterested in even being there. In fact we were an inconvenience to them by our very presence. My kids (aged 8 and 13 yrs) were in tears of laughter by the end of the night after watching their antics and their complete lack of manners or care. The kids meal were good though and great value for money. Adults meals were ok and cost too much.
Movies a great idea for kids and the pool was spooky! Small, less than a metre deep and with a very low ceiling...really weird. Other weird thing was the hundreds of bunny rabbits all around the hotel....the mountain is a world heritage site, but clearly has a major problem with rabbits!

I would recommend a visit for a drink in the bar or the high tea, just to take in the grandeur of the hotel main lounge, but certainly wouldn't stay again.
What a shame for such a grand old lady of a hotel...it could be so much more.
