who needs scuba gear when you can pop your head under in knee deep water and watch BIG snapper cruise by? The range of fish... the sheer size of the crays... If you think getting into the tank at Kelly Tarlton's is great, svae the money and drive to Goat Island

You can scuba dive, snorkel, watch the fish from the rocky shore or from the Glass Bottom Boat or kayak the coast. The marine life in abundance makes for a memorable day especially if you can swim and explore.

Great place to see what New Zealand's coastal marine life was like before humans arrived. Well worth having a snorkel or even better a scuba dive to see huge snapper, crayfish and moki mooching around.

This is a lovely spot a shortish drive north of Auckland and on a sunny day with the tide out the water is very inviting. We visited in January on a hot 28degree day but the water was very cold so without a wetsuit don't bank on being able to stay more than 30 minutes. If you're an Aussie like me, you'll be disappointed by the fish on display but you can easily see a few snapper and blue Mao Mao and other fish around but they're few and far between or were on our visit. We arrived at 10:30 am on a Tuesday and there was barely a car park left. It was worse when we left two hours later after having several families set up within a meter of us on the beach - yes it's that busy! The hike up the lookout nearby is worth it for the view and overall this is a nice location but go early and also be prepared for the rip off $20 two hour snorkel rental. There are no lockers and from what we saw, no food and drink, but nice public totes and changing areas and the landscaping etc is all well done.
