Hard to think that this is a recognized national highway in NZ but I can certainly see why. A 'must do' if in NZ

We drove down ninety mile beach in the bus, stopping for a few photos. Amazing and so isolated. Hardly anyone on the beach. Lovely weather

Yes we walked on this at several points. The lowest part at Ahipara was perhaps the least interesting and most "crowded" if such a thing is possible. At the top end we went over the giant sand dunes (take a strong bin liner if you want to slide down) and that was quite a treck but we had the beach to ourselves (no-one else mad enough for the hike). Also went on about 1/2 way down and at Waipapkauri. The latter a longish drive through pine forests. I imagine would make a challenging run from top to bottom for those with marathon masochism in their souls (like our younger daughter) - its 65 miles actually not 90.
However, perhaps just as interesting is the silver sand Rarawa beach on the Pacific side. Don't miss this and, if like the other half your into shells, walk down to the rocks and pools at the south end where there are some interesting varieties.

This would have to be one of the great driving experiences in NZ. Make sure you drive the stream bed to exit or enter the beach. Do check the tides as it is impassable in places at for three hours either side of high tide.

It goes on & on, if we had gone on an organised tour we would not have liked it, but with the person firm our Farm stay arranging a tour with his friend it was special
