“Very casual campground”
Reviewed March 12, 2014

We stayed here for 3 nights in our caravan, found the facilities were good, but the grounds are in need of some attention. Lots of dirt flying around everywhere. Beach is lovely, just a stones throw away. There is a small shopping area about 4 ks away, can get most of the necessary items there.

The location of this camping ground on the face of it is good - absolute beach front onto a long sandy beach. The drawback to the location is the strong onshore wind and the sand and salt it blows with it. If you can get a position out of the wind then I would suggest doing so. The welcome at reception was unprofessional. The whole place looked closed up - the office was unattended and the "shop" did not appear to exist any more. The toilets were dirty and smelly. The showers weren't much better although there was plenty of hot water and they were free. There is a shortage of hooks in the showers and around the wash basins. There is no dry area in the showers for changing. There were cobwebs everywhere. We didn't use the kitchen but it looked large. The bins needed emptying and were smelly. The place overall was quiet considering it was January and there was plenty of space.

This isn't really Kaitaia but the Karikari peninsula which is slightly further south on the east coast. It's a great location. We stayed in one of the units and they're just behind low low sand dunes with the beach on the other side. And it's a lovely beach. Long, white sand. No big waves while we were there but not as calm as a harbor either. We were in and out of the ocean all day. The unit was basic but clean and tidy with a living/dining/kitchen (which means you can cook all your meals there) and a bedroom and a bathroom. There are plenty of other great beaches around like Matai Bay further up the peninsula of you want some beach variety.

Room Tip: Ask for the unit by the beach but furthest away from the entrance. That way you don't have so ma...
