“Comfortable and Relaxing Stay”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

I stayed here overnight while travelling for work. Hosts were extremly friendly and helpful. My unit was clean, comfortable and had everything I needed for a nice relaxing stay. Good off road parking. I really couldn't have asked for more. I will certainly be back the next time I am in the area. Thanks for a great stay.

We stayed here during a tour of Northland, and while it is beyond easy walking distance from the town centre, it is only 5 minutes away by car. However, there is a supermarket just accross the road.
Though not expensive, our unit was comfortable, well appointed and spotlessly clean. The main highway is just outside the entrance, but the traffic noise from our unit at the back was barely noticeable. Our hosts were pleasant and very helpful.
One niggle would be that Wi Fi is not available in every unit.
However, this would be a good low cost base for a trip up to Cape Reinga and we would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: If you want Wi Fi, when booking ask for a unit that has good reception from their router.

When looking for a place to stay in Kaitaia I noted from Tripadvisor that this motel had received some mixed reviews, with ratings ranging from “luxurious” to “deplorable”, but we decided to give it a go and booked in for two nights (NZ$120 per night). The location was attractive as we had booked to go on a Cape Reinga - 90 Mile Beach tour and the tour operator’s (Harrisons) depot was located across the road from the motel.
The motel is located on the outskirts of the town on highway No 1. What I can say is that this motel is definitely not luxurious but not deplorable either. However, there may be better accommodation options in the town.
The motel looks as though it was built around the 1970’s but it is well maintained. There is a small pool and bar-b-que area, guest laundry (for a fee) and a kids’ playground at the back. Our room was a “one bedroom suite” i.e. the bedroom was separate, but was somewhat claustrophobic with basic furnishings. The main room contained full kitchen facilities (fridge, stove, micro wave) together with crockery and cutlery, tea and coffee making facilities (milk provided on arrival but thereafter not provided, unless you pay for it). There is also a separate dining table, couch, a small flat screen TV and a single bed for a third person. The room and kitchen facilities were immaculately clean and the paintwork looked fresh. The bathroom was basic but again, very clean.
Breakfast is not available (contrary to the information booklet supplied). If you want breakfast, there are places in the town (Kaitaia Bakery and Café) that open early and the town has a couple of decent restaurants. If you wish to self-cater, there is a large supermarket about 50m from the motel that sells everything you will need.
There was no air-conditioning or fans but all rooms had windows that opened, however, I think the room would be uncomfortable on hot days. Not surprising, there is no Wi Fi available.
There is not a lot to see or do in Kaitaia itself. Unless you really need to stay in Kaitaia, a much better and more appealing option is the village of Mangonui, a beautiful village (via highway 10) situated on Doubtless Bay and about half an hour’s drive from Kaitaia. You can drive to Kaitaia to catch tours to the 90 Mile Beach (parking facilities available at Harrisons).

We stayed two nights in a beautifully appointed suite, across the road from Harrison's whose coach we were going on for the Ninety Mile Beach daytrip. The motel is at the edge of town but right next door to Pak'n'Save for great shopping. The manager was very friendly, jovial and helpful at any time. He took time out to show us around and explain where things were in town and nearby.. Our suite was spacious and well-equipped, an absolute delight. Utensils and finishings were modern with a touch of quaint. The pool was small but welcome after a day's slow sightseeing travelling. We would certainly returned to this motel at the gateway to the Cape, although the town itself had little to offer, except a great restaurant not far away.

A large group of us had booked multiple rooms for a fishing trip but we arrived to discover poor planning, stressed management and rude service.

The manageress blamed all the confusion on us, her customers, and showed no professionalism in resolving the issue. We truly did not feel welcome at all and begrudged staying there.

The facility itself was acceptable; clean, reasonably priced and well located but none of this made up for the atmosphere created by the manageress.

Proprietor is nuts. She has no concept of service and inflated the price of the stay seeing that we were road weary and tired. Spa was empty, looked like it hadn't been filled for some time. Dated decor and poor bed were forgivable but the attitude from the manageress was inexcusible. Sarcasm and blatant rudeness have no place in the hospitality industry.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere
