Helpful new receptionist, polite & willing to go the extra. Room was clean and spa was good, didnt like idea of gym facilities combined in same room as spa. A small dog on its own :-( locked up in room across from us-who continuously barked until owner came back (approx.3 hrs). I'm a great animal lover, love idea about allowing animals but there should be rules. Handy to everything in Kaitaia and 15 mins to beach. Needed to cancel earlier bookings due to bereavement & they were very good about that-thanks for making that easy. Overall, motel itself was good, nice for a stopover & the price.

Room Tip: Only had studio room, would look @ another room if need to do stopover again.

I would say, this hotel is just an OK place to stay. When we planned to visit Kaitaia, I searched for hotels and tried all hotels with good rating and couldnt get a booking. Then I tried this hotel after reading all bad and few average reviews. The hotel building, and its beauty, style, its location in city and staff behavior.. everything, I would say excellent! But when we enter the hotel, we felt like, we are in 1980s!!! old painting, color, bulbs, lamp shades, bath room fittings, TV, microwave.. everything is very old. But it was ok for us to stay just for a night from 9 PM to 7 AM next day. In short, I would suggest you to stay there only if you are there just to sleep! Breakfast was free, but nothing much was there. Only few cereals and juice/tea/coffee.

Room Tip: Just book this only for your night stay!!

This is a large hotel with about 80 rooms. When we arrived there must have been only about 4 other guests. The outside looks presentable but the inside is dark and gloomy. Despite the empty number of rooms we were given a room next to someone else who liked to have the TV on late and loud. Not necessarily the Hotels fault though.

The room was like many NZ motels and hotels - clean but tired and in need of an update. It was also dark and depressing, with only a single floor to ceiling window that was blocked by shrubbery. Strangely enough this was also the fire escape but you'd have to extremely thin to get through it.

We booked on line at a rate that was higher than advertised on the board outside. We queried this and was told that our rate included breakfast. Breakfast was a joke. A continental breakfast of tinned fruit (in a land that grows plenty of fruit), boxed cereals and a few slices of white or brown toast. Plus tea and coffee. The waitress asked us if we'd like a cooked breakfast, which was only the poor choice offered in most Uk based Hotels. We went for the scrambled egg and hash browns. The following day a waiter asked us if we'd like a cooked breakfast so we said yes the same as yesterday and were told this would cost $18. We told him that our rate included break fast but when he check it was only a continental breakfast....$10 worth of not very good stuff.

We declined the dinner in the hotel and found an excellent place called the Beachcomber just down the road.

Internet access was expensive - the only place in NZ that we've been charged for this.

In summary a tired and depressing hotel with few guests. Breakfast not worth the extra. Internet access expensive. Rooms very dark and depressing but clean.

Strange that the hotels/motels opposite where buzzing with life.

Room Tip: Try another hotel/motel

Six cars including ours were broken into while staying here last night. The Manager sat in the back office showing no sympathy whatsoever and left everything up to the poor receptionist (who was new). We understand these things happen but after talking with the local police this hotel has had this happen many times before. Putting a sign up stating guests cars are parked at the owners risk doesn't disqualify hotel management from taking any responsibility. Apparently, a security company does checks but this obviously isn't enough and more needs to be done.
The decor and rooms are also very dated. The advertised air conditioning is in fact a fan. The cost of staying most certainly was NOT worth it.

We stayed at The Northerner in September 2012. Although rather old, it was amazing. We were the only ones staying on that night but the restaurant and bar were open for us to relax and enjoy a wine and a great meal. When we went in for breakfast, we found the room set up for us to enjoy our contential breakfast (which was included in the cost of our room).

Our room was a little mustly but bed was comfortable and we had a great night's sleep.

The staff from the Manager to the very nice lady in the restaurant/bar should be commended on their Customer Service.

We would stay there again if in the north of New Zealand.

Good customer service from the staff, but definitly not good value for money. The place is really outdated. Probably one of the worst places ive stayed in in a very long time. Walking through the coridors felt like i was in "the shining" or something! Very outdated, would definitly not go back. The heater did not work in the room. There was not much lighting.

Room Tip: Do not stay here
