“The Perfect Way to Start Married Life.....”
Reviewed May 20, 2008

When we were looking for somewhere to stay the night before our wedding, and to host our intimate wedding for 2 if the weather turned sour, we stumbled upon this little gem of a place.

This was the only B&B we booked in our 3 week tour of the South Pacific, as we wanted something a little less impersonal than a hotel chain for our wedding day.

There are only 3 rooms, 2 doubles, and a stunning suite at the front overlooking the beach and ocean (see our photos)

The Oceanfront is in one of the most stunning places in New Zealand, looking out onto the southern edge of Mercury Bay with all the rocky islets being lapped by the South Pacific, nestled between Cathedral Cove a couple of miles to the north, and Hot Water beach just the other side of the headland.

It is the perfect place to both relax and enjoy the sheltered bay and beach in summer, and explore the wonderful Coromandel peninsula with it's endless beaches, coves and views.

The house is worthy of a Kevin McCloud grand design visit! with stunning vistas out to sea from every angle, big rooms with views, a stunning deck and lawn for breakfast and tea, which drops straight down onto the beach below.

Joe & Raewyn, as the other reviewees warmly testify are perfect hosts. Having not been able to bring any of our friends and relatives with us on our wedding & Honeymoon tour of the Pacific, it almost felt like we'd stumbled across a long lost Aunt and Uncle. Especially as they knew our wedding co-ordinators David & Stephanie, and "Dave the Chef" from the local restaurant who was kind enough to be our witness, it felt like the whole of Hahei was celebrating our wedding with us!

It was great just sat on the deck over morning tea and the bubbly, Cath and Raewyn chatting about books, Joe and I on finance, fishing, and the state of the housing market!

Combined with the sunshine, It made the whole day perfect.
We had a lovely fruit and cereal starter breakfast before heading out to Lonely Bay for our wedding, and came back to a cooked breakfast (delicious bacon, mushroom omelette served on the deck overlooking the ocean, and glass of bubbly! which was absolutely lovely.

We really didn't want to leave, and wished we'd booked an extra day in Hahei now! but we were running a tight schedule to see as much of NZ in a fortnight as we could.

So take our advice, and that of the other reviews...if you're a couple looking for somewhere to relax, no kids, no rush, no need for a la carte room service, then the Hahei Oceanfront is the perfect place to stop and chill for a few days, if like us, you're hell bent on flying round New Zealand to see it all in a couple of weeks!

other things worthy of a note:-
Also useful, if like us you needed to update a web-site, and re-confirm flights, etc, is a PC with internet access on the landing upstairs.

Take a moonlit stroll down the beach towards the restaurants, we did the night before our wedding, it was lovely.

Contact Joe & Raewyn before you travel - they'll happily book a restaurant for you, there are 3 within strolling distance - "the Church", "Luna", and a pub I can't remember the name of.

NB:- we went just at the end of the summer season, and all the restaurants in the area close about 8ish at the latest if there's no one eating.....though say Hi to Dave the Chef at Luna from us!

We shall return!

We spent 2 nights at the Hahei Oceanfront during our 3 week stay in New Zealand. The house is stunning. It sits on the Pacific Ocean with an unobstructed view. There is direct access to the beach. Although it rained the 2 days we were there, one could still appreciate the view and drama of a storm on the sea. Simply looking out the living room window was a show. If the sun had been out, I am sure, it would have been very difficult to leave. You don't find a piece of heaven every day.

Joe and Raewyn are excellent hosts. They directed us on things to see, places to east. Raewyn's breakfasts were delicious!!

Our room was very comfortable, high quality linens and a very comfortable bed. The house is impeccably clean.

Anyone visiting The Coromandel Peninsula owes it to themselves to have a stay at Hahei Oceanfront!!

From the minute hosts Joe & Raewyn opened the door and greeted us through to our hugs goodbye, our stay at Hahei Oceanfront was delightful. As hosts they are warm, welcoming, helpful, and highly competent. The house is a fine example of modern New Zealand style residential architecture, impeccably furnished with a lovely serene color scheme. The site is second to none, right on the beach, literally steps to the water but raised on a bank so you can watch and look on without loss of privacy.

We enjoyed breakfasts on the deck looking out at the beautiful scenery, even the friendly touch of little mini-flags of our home country on the table to make us feel welcomed. We also enjoyed a happy hour with appetizers and wines where we had lively conversation with the other guests and our hosts.

They took great pride in sharing both their home and the areas amenities; making dinner reservations, hiking, and boating recommendations. Even on our departure they suggested further sight seeing opportunities. There is a kayak available to guests at no fee.

Raewyn and Joe run their B&B with 100% sincerity; they are truly warm and wonderful hosts.

We cannot speak highly enough of our experience at Oceanfront with Raewyn and Joe who treated us more like friends or family than paying guests.

Their genuine interest in people shines through. They are also very interesting people if you get them to talk about themselves. Their local knowledge and tips are very helpful.

The house is fabulous and puts many boutique hotels to shame. Its view and position, a walk down the garden path to the beach, are outstanding. We loved walking back from dinner under the stars along the beach.

The beach itself is stunning with its backdrop of little islands and the headland, lovely clean sand too, great for jogging along first thing in the morning.

Raewyn's breakfasts are top-notch in terms of quality, quantity and variety - hence the jogging first thing in the morning! Pre-dinner drinks and canapes on the terrace in the excellent company of our hosts was a lovely touch.

The above and beyond parting gesture was when Joe washed the rear window of our exceedingly dirty hatchback, despite a water shortage!

We rate this first equal (with Fletcher Lodge, Dunedin) out of 17 different accommodations in the course of our trip to New Zealand. Don't miss it!!!

Hosts Raewyn & Joe made us feel perfectly at home in this spotless, modern, stylishly furnished B&B. A fabulous breakfast was provided on a terrace perched above a beautiful beach with breathtaking panoramic views. This is a fantastic stretch of coastline with superb walks and scenery. Local restaurants are great, just a stroll along the beach. There are no drawbacks here, but if you are shopping in Tairua, we had a bad experience at Milly`s. Watch out !

During our 7-week holidays in New Zealand, we mostly stayed in 4 and 5 star B&B's. Nearly all were of exeptional quality and made our trip in this beautiful country unforgettable. Of the 19 different lodgings we had, the Hahei Oceanfront was one of our favourites. The house is really wonderfully designed and the interiors are fabulous. The Mahurangi room was spacious and comfortable but it was the hospitality and kindness of Raewyn and Joe which made our stay one to be remembered. The breakfast was top as was the get-together with a glass of wine on the verandah, before going out for dinner. The views from the house towards the ocean are stunning. This address is top-of-the-bill.

A wonderful view will greet you as you enter this B&B - and what a friendly and hospitable greeting you are met with in this house. The breakfast is fantastic and is served on the veranda overlooking the ocean when the weather permits. You will fall asleep listening to the waves - A truly wonderful place that is highly recommendable.
