“Worth the walk!”
Reviewed May 30, 2014

Cathedral cove was a little bit of a walk - about 45 min each way. The walk there was beautiful with birds and flowers and a beautiful view of the coast. There were a few benches along the way to rest if you wanted.

Along the way there were little side tracks for Gemstone Bay, Mares Leg Cove, and Stingray Bay. Some of these had some fairly steep steps/track to reach.

At the end, Cathedral Cove itself - it was really a beautiful place. The trail came down some steps and opened out onto a wide flat beach, and to your left is the amazing cathedral archway. On the way back, we took the alternate path through the woods and saw neat rocks and had some shade. I would recommend trying one path one direction and choosing the other path on the way back.

TIPS: Wear sensible shoes and bring sunscreen and a hat - there's not much shade on this path!

“Still beautiful Cathedral Cove”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

Special slice of New Zealand perfection - check out cathedral cove near hahei on the Coromandel. Absolutely stunning and the walk down is good too, bush has grown so shade most of the way which helps on the way up on a hot afternoon. Take your togs if going in Spring, Summer or Autumn. And your camera of course.

“Iconic Scene for Narnia”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

If you're a fan of Narnia, you should definitely visit this place. It was in the Prince Caspian show. It is a reasonable walk away from the car park. A good 45 min to 1 hours walk one way. Went when the weather was dreadful, so it was nothing like what it should have looked like. It was all muddy cos it rained and wasn't enjoyable to walk. However, if the weather is normal and not pouring, it would be a wonderful walk to the cove.

The tide was too high to walk through the hole, but I think that was an abnormal day. You could bring slippers if you wanted to be on the safe side.

“Very pretty, but limited parking”
Reviewed May 21, 2014

Excellent attraction. The walk to the cove from the carpark is signed at 45 mins, but I'd say most people would do it comfortably in about 30; I took around 25 mins there, including some time to stop for photos, and under 30 return including taking a signed 10 min detour. The walk to the cove is really nice, and almost worth doing in it's own right. There were lots of people doing the walk and at the cove on a very pleasant Saturday, but it didn't seem overly busy - well, other than the carpark that is. There is seriously limited car parking available, and people were squeezing vehicles in everywhere. Signs just outside the carpark warn of substantial penalties for parking beyond the designated area. You could also park down in the Hahei township and walk from there, which would probably take an extra 10 or 15 minutes.

Once you're at the cove, it's a very pretty place. It's a fascinating formation and there's some amazing colours out there. There's some great photo opportunities, and many people were enjoying the water, even in mid-April, though be aware that the beach didn't seem to be patrolled. I stayed out there almost an hour, but could happily have just sat back and whiled away the time for much longer enjoying the delightful location. Definitely worth a visit - props to the farmer that donated this land for the enjoyment of the people of NZ and the world.
