The hike out to the coves was really beautiful, and was just the right mix of uphill and down, making it a nice workout without being too stressful. Of course, the views were totally worth the hike. The cliffs and the ocean were breathtaking.

An obvious highlight for the peninsula. About 25min walk each way with some reasonable climbing via stairs. Very photogenic both in the cove and along the walk on the way in.

A must see place with a good track down to the cove made walking easy. We walked down to the cove twice. Once whilst dark to capture the sunrise. We also took a cruise along the coast. Would love to go back there.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED DETINATION... Definitely a must visit for me . Park your vehicle in the car park by Hahei beach and then make this 55min to 1 hr 10 min walk (including a few stops to take photos) from the beach to the coves via a scenic cliff-top pathway. It's incredibly breathtaking and makes for a beautiful place to click pictures... There are no facilities, so take everything you need on the walk. The walk over to Cathedral Cove was beautiful with views of islands and blue seas, expensive YACHTS plying . It has a huge cave like structure with beach at both sides..white sand.. clear waters..Huge rocks carved by wind and water make for a splendid view. It is a secluded getaway from the stressful world. a place where you can spend whole day without thinking.. such a beauty of nature.. The walk to tis place is also very interesting.. Take a breath a do visit this place..put some easy clothes.. carry water .. and take food along.. you will never forget this place.. ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACES I HAVE VISITED TILL DATE....

This was a fabulous way to spend a few hours and highly recommended. Definitely a top five for me during a month in New Zealand in Feb 2013. We parked in the car park by Hahei beach and then made the 55min walk (including a few stops to take photos) from the beach to the coves via a scenic cliff-top pathway. The walk involved some steps at intervals, to kick up your heart-rate, but wasn't taxing if you're hiking-fit. On a nice day (and even on a dull day I suspect), it's incredibly picturesque. If it's warm, take plenty of water, something to sit on, a picnic and your camera. There are no facilities, so take everything you need on the walk. Hahei beach looked like it's tide-line had been sculpted into scalloped edges, and the walk over to Cathedral Cove was punctuated by beautiful views of islands and blue seas. Upon arrival at the Cove, we first saw the white rocky pinnacle standing in the water just off the beach, again like a natural sculpture, and a cave at the far end. Turning the other way was a massive cavernous archway that passed straight through the headland and joined the two beaches. The second beach was similarly beautiful and had it's own white pumice-stone formation stood in the sea. We took photos, explored the extents of the coves and then settled on the beach to have a picnic and enjoy the view. Perfect. The boys spent an hour body surfing in the waves, and we relaxed into admiring the tree-lined cliffs, blue water and even spent a while messing about on the sand (rude not to). With such a beautiful setting, the beaches were never short of people, but not in an intrusive way. The walk over the cliff offered chances to visit Gemstone Bay and Stingray Bay (40 and 45 mins from the car park), but we confined this visit to Hahei and Cathedral Cove. Would go back here in a shot. It was gorgeous.
