“Awesome!”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

We were planned to finish our long NZ holiday in the Coromandel Peninsula by reading, sunbathing, etc.. We decided to stay in the Tatahi Lodge and booked a double. As this was in early april, the Lodge was empty and as others, we were also offered to stay in the motel unit, for the same price.

The unit was awesome, seemed freshly built, with 2 large rooms (2-2 bunks in each), a really comfortable lounge, with separated reading area and spacious, well-equipped kitchen. We were on our own for one night, and with 2 others (one guy seemed to work there and a girl who became his girlfriend while we were there :D )

Cathedral Cove is in walking distance, so as the amazing beach. Hot water beach is 30 mins drive away.

However our sunbathing was ruined by the weather, we can recommend this place with good heart.

One little drawback: the TV in the lounge is on a thin wall, so if your room is on the other side of that wall, your sleep may be disturbed if others watching the TV in the lounge. Earplug can help of course.

Having recently stayed for four nights in a Studio Room we can highly recommend this accommodation. We've travelled throughout much of the North Island over many years and in our opinion this is the best motel we've stayed in. The rooms are just what you need and the garden surrounds are inspirational.

We stayed at Tatahi Lodge for 5 nights at the end of our trip to NZ. All we wanted was to stay close to the beach in beautiful natural surroundings and relax before our long trip back to Europe. We got all that at Tatahi Lodge. Even though they have nice backpacker lodgings, we were sick of dorms and decided to take private rooms instead. We were lucky, as they had opened up a motel unit for backpackers at twin/double room prices. The unit consists of two bedrooms with a shared bathroom, kitchen and living room. One night we had it to ourselves which was pure luxury. The other two we had really nice neighbours which made it a really fun stay. It was great to have your own kitchen and the opportunity to have peaceful breakfasts, barbeques and dinners right outside our unit. Alternatively, the backpackers kitchen and communal facilities are open for all guests as well. The remaining nights, we decided to take a more expensive studio unit which was also very nice, quite big with private bathroom, tea/coffee making facilities and fridge as well as a nice backyard to chill out. Both units were extremely nicely decorated, very homey and comfortable. The hosts are very nice as well and very helpful and accommodating. Small shops, cafes and the beach are only around the corner, Cathedral Cove is about an hours walk away. Nice touches were complimentary beach towels and shovels for each unit, so we didn't have to rent any when we went to Hot Water Beach. We had an amazing, relaxing and fun stay at Tatahi Lodge, met great people and would recommend this to anybody!

Room Tip: If you can, try and get a motel unit room for twin room prices!

Very tranquil setting near the lovely Hahei beach. Our 2 bedroom cottage was nestled in lovely grounds, with nice area to eat outside. Lovely smell of jasmine. A spade hangs outside for you to take to Hot Water Beach - so you don't have to pay $5 to rent one. Nice touch (too bad we'd already been!). Very well equipped place with decent kitchen and utensils, nicely furnished and with tv, dvd and hi-fi. Very good value. Lovely staff who gave us great tips. We walked to Cathedral Cove early in the morning upon the reception guy's advice - and it was advice worth listening to as we had the place to ourselves!! Was a blissful walk there and on the lovely beach. Everyone in Hahei seemed so happy and relaxed. No wonder - it is such a lovely place. Wish I'd had more time to spend in the region.

We stayed here on recommendation from the host of our motel in the Bay of Islands.we had a studio room which was very cosy.I would agree with the other reviewer who mentioned the lack of sink for washing dishes so we had to ssh them in washhand basin in bathroom.however this didnt
spoil our stay.the host was very helpful and we had access to the loan of a spade for digging in hot water beach.we were able to use the bbq facilities at the backpackers accommodation which was great.it was also convenient to walk to the local grocery store, beach etc.
We would stay here again.

We had an extended-family holiday on the North Island in November, staying in Hahei for our last two nights. We'd had such a wonderful time at Lake Tarawera that, upon leaving and undertaking the fairly long drive to Hahei, I worried it might be a disappointing end to our trip. Thankfully, it was all worth it - the superb weather continued, Hahei was spectacular, and I'm so glad I'd booked the Waimarie Villa at Tatahi Lodge as it was such a lovely place to spend our last two nights.
Upon arrival we received a very friendly greeting with an offer of beach towels and beach toys for our kids, and a jug of milk! The Villa was slightly separate from the rest of the lovely motel, surrounded by a garden with a screen for privacy. It was bright, spacious, modern, spotlessly clean, incredibly well-equipped and very comfortable. There was a large dining table inside, and another outside with an umbrella (and a BBQ). We all wished we could stay for much longer - you could easily live in the Villa, unlike most holiday accommodation where you'd miss the space or amenities of home.
Our young kids loved running laps of the garden, and the playground so close they could see it from their bedroom. We loved being able to walk to the shop for supplies, and being so close to the truly gorgeous beach. We went on a kayak tour (booked through Tatahi reception) and only needed to allow a few minutes to walk there, which was great.
I'd really recommend Tatahi Lodge, and in particular the Villa. My husband, two kids, and I took one room while my parents took the room at the other end of the house - it wasn't at all cramped, even with so many people, because of the fantastic outdoor space. My sister had a private room at the backpacker lodge which she said was great. From what I saw of it, and the Motel Units, I could have stayed anywhere in Tatahi and enjoyed it.

Room Tip: If you've got enough people in your group to make it worthwhile, the Waimarie Villa is just wond...

Limited availability in this area, lack of information about the region led me to book this place.
Stayed in the BAy of Islands and the prices there were far more reasonable. More bang for your buck.
Room had tea & Coffee making facilities just as advertised, only problem was no where to wash the cups or plates, bathroom sink wasn't up to the job, I worried about breaking a dish or two.
Basic accommodation but very high price.
Should have stayed longer at the Bali Hai Motel in the Bay of Islands. Instead I listened to fellow travelers who said "see the Coromandel".
