The 4 hour trip to get there was fascinating, 2 hours by motor boat, 2 hours on a dug out canoe, our Naturalist guide pointed out all the flora ,fuana ,birds monkeys etc, just being in the Rainforest was a great experience, during the day ,very quite, at night a symphony of noise.
The Napo center was outstanding, our thatched hut had a comfortable bed, with netting, no a/c,locks on doors, tv ,actually could sleep 3, 2 beds the food was excellent, wake up call at 5 am took a little getting used to. our guide Luis, was fabulous..all in all a first rate experience, for the adventure traveler.

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking the lake

All huts are built to blend in with the nature, clean, spacious and cozy. An afternoon nap on the hammock after an early morning in the forest is refreshing. Sipping a glass of fresh juice amidst the silence while watching the sunset above the lake from the high tower is unforgettable.

The hospitality and service is excellent. The staff call guests by name which is special. Welcome drink is awaited as soon as guests first arrived and after hours in the forest. All meals are well prepared, fresh and delicious.

Local guide is very knowledgeable. Bird watching from the tower above canopy with the sound of howlers from distance is fascinating. Taking canoe and walking in the forest at night is wonderful.

I personally appreciate their water treatment and environment protecting policies as well as no noise pollution. No engine boat but canoe is used. It is important not to disturb but to respect the wildlife.

I definitely stay at Napo again on my next visit.

The whole trip was great, from the motorised canoe to the slower paced paddling along the creek to the lake where the lodge is located. We saw loads of stuff, and thankfully our guides understood that we were there for the whole experience and not just interested in birds.
We had one of the new suites which have been built over the swamp (room 13), not very nice to look at the messy swamp below when you compare to the other rooms but the inside was beautiful. It is a shame they chose to put the hammock up at the rear of the cabin as the views over the lake would have been preferable over the swamp. So instead we sat on the porch and enjoyed the amazing view from there.
They are currently building another 2 room complex on the other side, again in the swamp and it concerns me that the lodge is going to get too big as I hear they are wanting to build even more rooms, this really shouldn't happen! The current facilities can not handle more guests and to expand the site would be a travesty, when it was smaller a lot more wildlife came into the lodge itself, this doesn't happen very much any more I am told.
The food was fantastic, however get used to group meals. Alone time if you are there as a couple doesn't really happen.
The service was great, my husband was ill one morning and they offered him alternative lunch and dinner to suit him.
The local guide Remi was fantastic and very keen, he also has the eyes of a hawk and so pointed out a whole load of things we would never have spotted.
The use of filtered lake water is a very eco friendly feature, and the whole ethos of the lodge is great.
Tips would be take plenty of repellent and cover yourself in it! Also be aware of the ants around the lodge, particularly the fire ants. Do not stand on them the bite is very painful. Take a torch for when you are walking back to your room after dinner, that way you can avoid stepping on them.

Thank you for your review back in June 2011. We would like to say that no other cabins have been built at Napo, just the construction of a new restaurant on the lagoon. Please feel free to tell friends about us

We spent three magical nights at the lodge this May, before travelling on to the Galapagos. The trip in by boat / 'canoe' was in itself an adventure, and once at the lodge we were looked after perfectly. Great guiding from Migel & Jorge - we saw an abundance of monkeys, sometimes very close up, plus a wonderful array of birds and other wildlife.

Highly recommended

Napo Wildlife Center is not easy to reach, but once you are there, the experience is outstanding. The journey to the center begins with a flight from Quito to Coca. Our flight was delayed, ironically, due to a heavy rainstorm in Coca. The next leg of the journey is 2/12 hours up the Napo River by motorized launch. The river is wide and shallow, and not easy to navigate but our drivers knew the river intimately and we zipped along..The last leg of the journey is supposed to be in a paddled dugout up a stream to the lagoon across from the wildlife center. However, if the stream is too low, you will have an hour's walk. I saw this in Trip Advisor reviews, but didn't think it would happen.

An hour is not so bad you say? Well, no..but you will make that trip many times. We walked out and back to pick up the launch for Parrot Lek viewing..we walked part way out and back for tower viewing, and then we walked out to pick up the launch to leave. You will know that trail intimately. The warning then is, if you are not in good physical condition, make sure to check on the water level before you go. Also, if you have foot issues, bring your own rubber boots.

Once you are there it is paradise..the accomodatons, food and guiding are excellent. The guides are indigenous, born and raised in the jungle and know it intimately. They are also well versed in environmental science. Highlights were River Otters, an Anaconda digesting a meal, Caymen at dawn and birds, lizards, birds, insects, bats, birds..!!

Room Tip: Ask for a cabin on the lagoon shore

Hi, we hope you still remember your time at Napo fondly, it is very rare that the river is so low that guests have to walk and of course should there be any health issues guest can stay i the canoe.

My wife and I, both in our early 60s, were travelling through Ecuador taking in the wonderful bird life. We booked three nights at the Napo Wildlife Centre having seen their stand at the UKs Rutland Water Bird Fair.
What an excellent decision. We were picked up from Coca Airport by Miguel the centre manager and taken to the River Napo where we travelled for 2.5hrs at a fast pace in a motor boat. This in itself was an exciting experience as we sank further into the Amazon Rain Forest. We eventually stopped at the head of a small black water tributary to the Napo and headed off in a paddled canoe 8km to the Wildlife centre. During the journey we saw Anaconda, Monk Sakis, Giant River otters, Macaws, Donacobius, Boat Billed Heron, the list is endless. Eventually we came to a tranquil lake, at the far end were the lodges, our home for 3 nights. The staff and the guides could not have been more welcoming. Our room was excellent with a perfect shower and toilet facilties. The bed was claen and of a good size. We slept under a mosquito net but I do not think that this was entirely necessary. The food was delicious and varied, I have never seen such a selection of fruit for breakfast.
During our stay we were guided by Robby Delgado and Patrice both who could spot a tyrranualet at 100 metres! I must say we saw loads of bird species and during our brief stay at the Napo we bagged over 100 bird species.
I recommend the Napo Wildlife centre to anyone who is interested in wildlife and is not afraid of being in a remote location. I would love to return but there are so many other wonderful places to visit.
You must put this place on your Ecuadorian itinery!!

Room Tip: Try to get a room adjacent to the lake,

We had a great 4 night stay at Napo as part of our honeymoon. The first view you get as you get bought up the creek in a hand paddled canoe is absolutely stunning. The local community guides are so knowledgeable and really friendly, and the barman is great!
Only disappointing element is the pressure to tip, and very large amounts, but this seems to be the same on all trips in Ecuador.
