“Great for hummingbirds”
Reviewed June 1, 2008

We spent 1 night here, with dinner, breakfast and lunch. Reception was friendly, and offered an ample choice of wellington boots which you need for the walks. The food was OK, service was good.
We didn't see many birds on a 1.5-2 hour guided exploration of the grounds - Snake Valley trail, Antpitta trail, and part of the Toucan trail. But the hummingbird feeders at the front of the hotel gave us superb views of a range of hummingbirds.

My family and I just returned from Ecuador. We stayed at Septimo the last few days of our trip. We loved everything about our stay. The staff was great, the food was great, and we enjoyed our birding day with Pablo.

Pablo and Ana clearly enjoy what they do and are really brilliant and facinating individuals. It is truly amazing what they have managed to do with their property; it's breathtaking.

The staff was professional and courteous. We never had issue with running out of food as indicated in another review. If it was out, it was replenished. Mealtimes were like dining with extended family. All guests basically eat together and are always willing to share their daily adventures. What a great way to meet new and interesting people.

Perhaps one of the most amazing things is Ana herself drove my family and I to the airport. However, first, she brought us to Mitad del Mundo and waited for us, with her two young sons, in the parking lot overseeing our luggage. She did all of this to allow us to do the "tourist" thing and take a picture of our kids on the Middle of the World. This speaks volumes of she and Pablo's character; the same attention goes into Septimo Paraiso, and it's visitors, as well.

This was my third summer visiting with Ana and Pablo, owners of Septimo Paraiso Hosteria and Nature Preserve. The location is fabulous for viewing birds, depending on the time of the year. I hiked the dry trails in the summer, and many members of our bird-banding and birding group are going back there this winter. The lodge and accommodations are very friendly and comfortable, but not elegant. The food is very good, but I was not expecting "haute cuisine." Everyone who works there is friendly.

I would be happy to go back there again sometime.

This was the third visit for my wife and I to Septimo Paraiso, and as usual it was excellent. The grounds are beautiful, with an abundance of flowers and birds. And speaking of birds, the hummingbirds are wonderful! The owners, Pablo and Ana, have created a paradise for the little jewels (after all, "Septimo Paraiso" translates to "Seventh Paradise" or "Seventh Heaven"). The dozen or more hummingbird feeders are arranged on the perimeter of a garden, and in the center of the garden is a covered gazebo with seats facing the feeders. A pretty cushy way to get a lifer Velvet-Purple Coronet :-) The food for people is first rate as well, and the staff are very nice. I highly recommend this hosteria.

A few months ago I took my Boss and his partner From England
we decide to stay at this lodge the location is ok but the service was just bad anyway they have an special litle garden for the hamming birds as they are so pasionated to watch them they came back again to vist this place but sorprice the girl who works there force them to have something to drink so they place an order for two beer the price everywhere is ONE AMERICAN DOLAR but when the asked for the bill she charge them 7.50 Dolars each plus 22% Taxes they ask why those prices they set they were before guest s at the lodge but she set that is the price anywy they pay and complain with the head ofice en quito and after three months they manage to get a letter in spanish saying that those are the prices, the letter say that they charge to the visitors tose amounts because they are preserving the Birds I have a property around and I can not see they are douing anything to preserve the birds.

I suggest they should have a price list on the web and in the instalations.

My visitors and myself will never go back gain there

Thanks in advance

We stayed at the Septismo Paradaiso for 1 night and had 2 rooms in this small resort which is situated on a large eco park. The accomodations were comfortable but not luxurious.
The lodge is very attractive and has great hikes and bird watching, although alot of rain as it is in the cloud forest. We got very dirty there so bring appropriate clothing or easy to wash clothes and shoes.
The pool area was nice but the pool was not heated so we didn't stay in long. There is a hot tub but it only comes on in the afternoon and it is crowded.
The food was average and the service very poor, especially at mealtimes. Sometimes there wasn't much left if you didn't arrive early and the staff wouldn't replace the juices unless asked in Spanish, so I would rate both food and service very poor. Also, we didn't know what much of the food or juice was as it wasn't labelled or it was too exotic to know (not a problem unless you have allergies). We found if we asked for something (such as ketchup - the food was bland) they would bring the tiniest amount and then we would have to ask for more. It made mealtime quite unenjoyable, although reading the visitors' book you would get the impression that the food and service was out of this world, so maybe it was us. I also got sick off something, think it may have been the watermelon - ok, I know I shouldn't have eaten it but there wasn't much else. Lunchtime food much better than dinner or breakfast (we had 2 lunches there and there was more than enough at lunch).
The hikes vary in length and endurance so bring a map (available at reception).
We also went into Mindo and did ziptrekking and water rafting both of which were enjoyed immensely, although somewhat terrifying.
The town isn't much but is a real experience - a large pig was being killed when we were there and it made the most horrible noices. Life will stare you in the face there!
Also hummingbird feeding station on hotel is full of wonderful species.
You may need a 4 wheel drive to get to hotel, as a warning. Certainly needed one for Mindo tours.
