“Affordable wonder”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

This place is set enough apart from the town of Mindo to allow you to feel isolated from it. The rooms are comfortable and very affordable. The family that run the hacienda make you feel very welcome. Five amazing tracks into the forest are available to all guests and can be taken alone or with a guide (extra cost). I really enjoyed my stay at the yellow house - true affordable wonder in Mindo

Very good communication regarding our booking and, more importantly, our pick up from the NEW Quito airport (we booked over 6 months in advance so the opening date wasn't confirmed). Our driver Martin was exactly as described ' white Toyota truck, about thirty, always smiling etc..,'!

We were in the Caimito cabin which was very private, clean and cozy. Large bathroom with a hot shower, lovely breakfast on the balcony, humming birds... as good as it looks on the website.

The town is only 5 mins walk away so you have the best of both worlds... restaurants and shops are close by and the beautiful trails at 'Yellow House' are on your doorstep. It's a great way to relax and acclimatise after a long flight.

A couple of things to bear in mind... my husband and i don't speak Spanish, so although the family made us feel very welcome we were unable to take advantage of there local knowledge (wildlife etc...). There were students staying in the main 'Yellow House' (I don't know if this is the norm) so if you want absolute peace and quiet I would recommend staying in one of the separate cabins.

Room Tip: Caimito cabin is very private.

My husband and I stayed three weeks in the River Cabin at the Yellow House. It was located down a short trail from the main house and offered a very well appointed kitchen, three bathrooms and four bedrooms on three different levels. Comfortable sofas and hammocks are located on two different decks.

Privacy is preserved as guests do their own cooking (or walk into town for meals) and do their own housekeeping. Linens are changed weekly and the cabin is cleaned at the same time.

Sisters Elena and Inez, along with their mother Carlota are charming hosts. They made us feel very welcome. When not out birdwatching on their property or elsewhere we enjoyed sitting on their porch gazing at the town below and watching the hummingbirds and tanagers.

The sisters will arrange bird guides. We took various day trips with Julia and Danny. They were both excellent and introduced us to the many birds in the area. Either one will give you your money's worth.

Room Tip: The rustic river cabin is perfect for people who want to be self catering.

We stayed at the Hacienda San Vicente/Yellow House for four nights during our two month holiday. The house is at the end of a long driveway which can get muddy in the rain so it is recommended to get a taxi if you have a lot of luggage. On arrival, we found that the owners were away but our driver was able to call them and we managed to fine someone who gave us our key and led us to our room in the rain. The staff member tried to sell us a session with their bird guide even after we had advised that we had arranged a bird guide prior to arriving.

We were given a room on the second floor of one of the buildings. The room is very basic but it is in beautiful surroundings. You could look outside the window and see nothing but green. It was also very quiet as we were the only ones staying in the building.

As we left early for the bird tour, the hosts packed us a lunch pack each day which we appreciated. We also enjoyed being able to watch the hummingbirds from the room in the main house although they didn't have any drinks to sell (Coca Cola).

We did the bird walk at the hotel and it is great for exercise. If you have a great bird guide, you will see some birds there if you put the effort in. We also managed to see some beautiful birds in the gardens of the hotel.

Overall, we really enjoyed our experience and we'd recommend Hacienda San Vicente.

Room Tip: Get the second floor room

Made my stay in Mindo heavenly. Large, quiet, comfortable, clean room with private bath and a hammock on the balcony overlooking the valley, breakfast in the main house watching toucans and dozens of other birds hop from branch to branch through the huge bay windows, porch to watch the humming birds come feed, and miles of jungle paths to explore. The owners and staff are really nice, the place is close enough to Mindo to be convenient, but far enough that you don't get the nuisance of traffic and week-enders. Only glitch: the Internet wasn't working, but there are plenty of Internet cafes in town. I also had access to a fridge to store a few snacks. Don't look anywhere else in Mindo.

Room Tip: I was in the annex next to the house, not the yellow house up the path. Worked out great for me.

The hacienda is located on a beautiful spot. It's on a hill viewing Mindo on only 10/15 minutes walking distance from town. The view from the main house, where breakfast is served, and the room is amazing. We had a room on the top floor: absolutely perfect: spacious, amazing view, quiet with your own patio. The price is very reasonable and the owners are very friendly. We wished we would have stayed longer!

We stayed at the Yellow House at Hacienda San Vicente for one night as a getaway from the city. We were informed at the last minute that there would be no breakfast available since the person who cooks it was out of town, which was unfortunate since that was one of the reasons we had chosen this place to stay. We rolled with it, though, and the person at the Yellow House who checked us into our room made sure to tell us about a couple places we could try for breakfast and other meals in town. The rooms and cabins are quite rustic and the bathroom located down a little hallway, though they made sure we didn't have to share with anyone but our own family. The property is quite lovely, with all kinds of trees, plants, flowers, and birds to enjoy, as well as long, private trails to hike through. But overall it seemed a bit rundown, like perhaps when the place was first built it had some wonderful potential but has not been kept up as well as it could have been. All in all it was a fine place to stay for one night, but I think if we were to stay in Mindo longer we would try a different place to stay.

Room Tip: Definitely request rooms on the upper floors of cabins for the best view and breeze.
