Angel Paz and his crew work hard to help visitors get close-up views and photos of Antpittas and other birds that are usually hidden in the underbrush. We saw Giant, Chestnut-crowned, and Yellow-breasted Antpittas. Although this refuge is known for its Antpittas, we also saw many other sought-after birds, including Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Dark-backed Wood Quail, and a mother and juvenile Potoo. They also have feeders that attract a variety of hummingbirds, tanagers, and Toucan Barbets. No birding trip to Ecuador is complete without Paz de Las Aves Bird Refuge. People who have mobility issues should be aware that hiking in hilly terrain is required to see some, but not all the birds.

Like so many others, our group came to see the amazing birds of Paz de las Aves, where Angel and his brother created the practice of hand-feeding Antpittas - notoriously hard birds to see. We were not disappointed!

Our day began with observing Cock-of-the-rock, but was interrupted by several Dark-backed Wood-quail that Angel had coaxed out of the forest and onto the trail. We then proceeded to get stunningly good looks at the Antpittas he has "trained" to respond to his call. These are very shy forest birds not often seen.

By late morning it was time to take a break for coffee and empanadas in the lovely little cafe he has built. Although I'm a dedicated birder, I believe Paz de las Aves will appeal to anyone with an interest in nature. Don't miss it!

Great birding walk. There are a wide variety of birds that can be seen. If you are in Mindo, you should go one morning.

I can't say enough about the morning we spent with Angel at Paz de las Aves. The birds were absolutely amazing: Cock-of-the-rocks on the lek, multiple antpittas, and a golden-headed quetzal, plus numerous other species. Angel was a joy to be around and the reserve he's created is so beautiful.

We had breakfast in the newly built restaurant, with a view of great hummingbird feeders. Breakfast was delicious.

Our birding group came to see the impossible to see antpittas being called out to feed on worms provided by Angel Paz and his brother. In the space of a couple of hours or so we saw four different almost mythical birds come right into the open to feed. The group was bowled over and all could hear was the camera shutters. We were so lucky and had great views. Each individual is well known to Angel and is called using its own name. It is fantastic and an honor to see what Angel Paz has created. During a break in the action we had coffee and a snack on their property with wonderful freshly made cheese empanadas. There is a small gift area.
