Owner description: The largest museum in America devoted to the history of whaling, it houses an extensive collection of art and artifacts relating to this industry during the age of sail.Through its educational programs and activities, the Museum looks to the future by engaging children, teaching that they are part of the fabric of the community, critical to its growth, and destined to be a chapter in its history. The Museum is a forum for whale and now fishing conservation, research and symposia. Its cultural outreach extends around the world, with close ties to Japan, Portugal and the Iñupiat people at the Arctic Circle. “History as it should be.”

With a whaling captain in my ancestry this was a must. My wife and I enjoyed it so much we joined at a higher level. Its beautifully designed, the displays are amazing. It allows kids to interact with the workings of a ship and is hands on and friendly. What was going to be a two hour visit lasted all day. We will return!

“History of the past”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

Everything. Plan on staying a while there are lots of exhibits and they constantly up date and change them Quite the place. The whole historic district is amazing with the history of the richest city in America at one time. Worth a few days to a week visit in Southeastern New England.

“Worth a detour”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

This is a wonderful museum for grown-ups and kids alike. It covers the rich history of whaling in New Bedford. Of special interest is a half-scale model of the whaling ship Lagoda, very educational and fun at the same time. If you are heading to the Cape or the Islands, or visiting nearby beaches, this is a great place to get a sense of the economic importance of the area, past and present.

“Very interesting”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

A very interesting museum. Lots that is interactive for the kids. Lots to see and read. Nice view of the harbour from the observatory deck. Doubt you will find a more informative whaling museum in North America. It's a shame what has happened to those animals - we need to ensure their future is protected.

“Versatile museum- Educational and interesting”
Reviewed August 27, 2013 via mobile

This museum is very versatile. They have art exhibits, hands on, feet on exhibits, artifacts, mult media, etc. It is laid out very well in sections so you can quickly decide which parts interest you. Don't miss the observatory for a great view of the New Bedford coast.
