Owner description: The largest museum in America devoted to the history of whaling, it houses an extensive collection of art and artifacts relating to this industry during the age of sail.Through its educational programs and activities, the Museum looks to the future by engaging children, teaching that they are part of the fabric of the community, critical to its growth, and destined to be a chapter in its history. The Museum is a forum for whale and now fishing conservation, research and symposia. Its cultural outreach extends around the world, with close ties to Japan, Portugal and the Iñupiat people at the Arctic Circle. “Anchor attraction in a fascinating maritime town”
Reviewed May 24, 2012

New Bedford has seen better days. Whaling is not exactly a booming industry and the mills closed several decades ago but the city's core remembers its maritime past with a collection of historic buildings, anchored by the Whaling Museum. This is the place to get your sea legs as you learn why New Bedford hosted the most vibrant whaling fleet in the U.S. The exhibits are clever and informative and the museum is located within walking distance of a number of other museums and historic buildings. Highly recommended.

“A beautiful museum in a beautiful setting”
Reviewed May 16, 2012

This fantastic museum is in the middle of a National Park in the midst of the city of New Bedford. In the lobby are reassembled skeletons of several whales hanging from the ceiling! The museum is wonderfully done and explains the history of whaling through displays. Also in the museum is a 1/2 size replica of an actual whaling ship from the early years of whaling in New Bedford. The volunteer guides in the museum do a FANTASTIC job of bringing the museum to life. DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!
