We had a wonderful time in Maui while "residing" at the Fairmont. Our room was spectacular - large, clean, updated - and the bathroom was something to write home about! And the lanai was also roomy with a lounge chair and table with four chairs. My husband and I have nothing but good things to say about our stay. The staff was friendly, and we especially loved the "lack of a crowd" feeling of the Fairmont. We never had difficulty finding a chair and umbrella at the adult pool, and the adult pool was always empty for our evening swims. The breakfast buffet (our reservations included the breakfast package) was always good, with a huge variety of items. Beware of the birds, though! Never leave your plate unattended! My husband and I didn't do the complimentary canoe excursion that the hotel offers, but my sister-in-law and her son did. They said it was a great excursion, so I do recommend you take the Fairmont up on this freebie!

I really enjoyed our time at the Kea Lani. I was very happy that we were given the keys to our room when we arrived (around 2 pm). We had a very nice view of the ocean. The room was very clean, and there was a ton of room. The bathrooms were huge. We were treated very well. We were always able to find chairs by the pool, and my daughter loved the pool. We also enjoyed the pool service for drinks and snacks. We did not eat many meals at the hotel, we went off property to eat. It was expensive, but I expected that. We had a lot of fun, and would suggest the Kea Lani to others.

We had a fantastic time at the Fairmont.
We enjoyed the property, the location, the staff, the room, the pool, the slide, the restaurants (especially those around the hotel in "The Shops at Wailea" [favorite = Longhi ***** but TommyBah. **** was also great]. Quote "An ultimate family holiday"... I expect we will return.

We had a great time here! Although our room wasn't ready at 2PM, they upgraded us to a full ocean view and we were in by 3:15. The prior week we had stayed at the Grand Wailea - then zipped over to Kauai for a week, and then returned to Maui for a few nights. I decided it would be good to try the Fairmont, and I'm so glad we did! The rooms are very, very large: large sofa, tv/stereo, desk, kitchenette with fridge/micro/sink, double balcony with table and lounge chairs. Best of all, the bathroom is also large and has GREAT WATER PRESSURE and separate shower/tub. Nice soaps, etc.... The suite was clean and had good quality sheets and towels. I booked the suite at 475.00 per night, and it was definitely worth it. At that rate, I could have booked 2 Fairmont suites for the price of one night-one (smallish) room at the Grand Wailea.

the atmosphere at the Fairmont is very different from the Grand Wailea. Hey, how about this for a concept: it was EASY to get lounge chairs by the pool/ocean when we wanted at the Fairmont!!! You'll search for ages for one at the G.W. The view is great, the beach is great, and NOT as manic/crowded at the G.W. I had two teens with me and they enjoyed the basketball goal in the pool, and the game room. The mini-market is great for staples, laundry soap, cereal/milk, ice cream. We enjoyed winding down our trip with the amazing views and super-relaxed atmosphere at the Fairmont. We sat out every evening for sundown, and it was EMPTY at the pool/lawn although the pools are open late each night.

Overall, I would absolutely stay at the Fairmont again, especially with kids. Other than our room not being ready early, we have no complaints whatsoever.

Our family booked a 2 Bedroom ocean front villa the week of June 29,2007. While, the grounds were beautiful and the staff of the Kea Lani helpful, we found the villas to be very disappointing. We chose this hotel as we wanted a kitchen and a pool, but to still be near the beach and at a resort.

The villas are near the ocean, and came with a plunge pool and outdoor grilling area. The pool needed to be cleansed throughly. We had daily maintenance, however it was pretty built up with residue.

The bedrooms in the villas are large and the bathrooms are great. There is a huge closet upstairs that seemed to be an after thought.

The living room area and kitchen are not accpetable for this standard of hotel. We found it to be quite run down and in need of a major updating. There is a couch and 2 chairs, the floor is tile with an indoor outdoor rug. The furniture is worn and the decor is thrown together. The kitchen has grantie countertops, but the cabinets appear to be the originals. There is very limited cooking supplies, pots, pans etc.. The floor is tile and is in need of repair, lots of dents. Eventhough the staff did clean daily, we still did not feel like the place was clean. It's just showing age from lots of people staying there and it is not good.

As we have a 1 1/2 year old we booked a day room before our flight home. The rooms inside of the hotel were much nicer than the villas. If you do not need a kitchen, this could be an option.
We felt that for $2500 a night the Fairmont needs to do some major renovations in order to retain customers. We will not be returning again.

My husband, kids (9 and 6) and I just returned from a week long stay at the Fairmont Kea Lani, and we were incredibly sad to leave!! We definately consider ourselves to be hotel snobs, and we never settle for anything less than 5 stars. We seriously considered both the Grand Wailea and the Four Seasons. However, the Grand Wailea looked too crowded and cattle-call-ish for us, and the Four Seasons would not allow us to book a Partial OV room with our 2 kids - they required 2 rooms or a $1000 per night suite (which we were not willing to do)!! We are soooo glad we chose the FKL. The service was top-notch, pool was beautiful and relaxing, yet fun for the kids (water-slide, basketball hoop). The breakfast buffet was great, but we actually got a few boxes of cereal and utilized the in-room refrigerator for an easy breakfast on the lanai most days, and saved ourselves $100 a day that we of course spent on other things - like a pool cabana (fabulous) and nice dinners. Dinner at Nick's was the best we had on the island - much, much better service and menu than at the Grand W. The best thing about the Fairmont are the very large rooms that are perfect for a family - it was like getting a suite without paying the $1000 per night!! We actually did check out both the Grand W. and the Four Seasons and found the Grand W. to have great architecture and nice gardens, but with a very dirty, over crowded pool. The Four Seasons was gorgeous, and would be great if we were traveling as a couple, but not a place for kids (and we often stay at other Four Seasons properties that are very kid-friendly). The Fairmont was wonderful ~ not inexpensive, but Nothing on Maui is if you want luxury....we definately felt it was money well spent.

June 24-July 1,
This was our first trip to Maui and we had heard great things about the Kea Lani--but had read the negative reviews on Trip Advisor thinking none of it would happen to us. Turns out, we are that unlucky couple that has the list of complaints. The first day was a fiasco, and it seemed that each day, something would go wrong or we were treated poorly. We're not picky people, but we do like to be treated politely and fairly. We felt like our trip to the Kea Lani was like one of the Chevy Chase "Vacation" movies. Are you kidding me?

After a very long day of travel, we arrive at 2:30 pm, Check in is not til 4:00, but they tell us it shouldn't be more than an hour before we get in our room & no upgrades available from our partial ocean view room, wait at pool bar and have snacks. Shortly after 4, we get keys to our room. Door keys don't work to 226, bellman's don't work well, but get us in & gives us a lesson on opening a hotel door, maintenance guy sent up to fix door while we go to pool (no champagne waiting, as requested). Come back to room (5:30-ish), expecting door to be fixed, door keys don't work. Go to front desk, request assistance. Wait by room for maintenance guy to return--in wet swim suits (and luggage is inside the room). Go back to front desk when no one arrives. Assured that maintenance is on the way. Still waiting, go back to front desk for the third time, and tell them to hurry up the maintenance guy.

Maintenance shows up and tells us that they had re-programmed the lock, closed the door, and then the lock would not open. Master key lock frozen, as well. Why didn't front desk know this? Maintenance has to drill open the door, after watching him for 10 minutes or so in the hallway, he suggests to the front desk that they get us a hospitality suite, since we are still in wet swim wear. Go to front desk, pick up keys for room across the resort. Privacy Please sign on the hospitality suite door (474). Knock loudly, enter cautiously, no one in room, bed is made up, but used towels & soap in bathroom. Enjoy cheese and crackers and bottle of wine we purchased from the store out on balcony--loud party going on in courtyard below. Finally, at 7:30 pm, we call front desk and ask how the drill team is coming along on our door--room is open and ready to go. (they said they'd call us when the room was ready...maybe we just beat them to it?)

Get in room, a knock on door, given a "gift" plaque describing Hawaiian tradition and the lei. Put out Privacy Please sign so we can put our stuff away and relax after long day of travel. Phone rings at 8:30 pm "We see you have your privacy sign out, but we have an amenity for you"--sounds like "manatee". They deliver a basket of macadamia nuts, 2 sodas, chips, and also our champagne and chocolate covered strawberries arrive with a hand written note apologizing for the door key fiasco.

We encountered rude staff at the valet parking area, business center and did not receive turn down service, but 3 of the 7 nights we stayed. At the pool, we waited over an hour for the waitress to bring us our drinks--she ended up buying them for us, since we waited for so long.

Snorkel off the beach, see sea turtle, enjoy sun and surf. No complimentary water on the beach today, one guy getting beach chairs, but can't keep up with the number of people wanting them--we get our own chairs. Dinner at Caffe Ciao restaurant at the Kea Lani. Nice dinner, we requested that they take our unfinished bottle of wine back to our room with a Bananas Foster cheesecake for dessert. We arrive at our room, no wine or dessert. Wait 10 mins, call restaurant and they said they sent our wine and dessert to room 626, rather than 226. After 10 mins, wine and dessert show up. Dessert was what looked like a grocery store freezer dessert, with caramel drizzled over it, and dried banana chips.

Some of these things seem trivial, but day after day of it, you just begin to feel like an unwelcome "guest".

The office manager of the Kea Lani did call after our negative comment card was received and they offered 2 nights free to be credited back to us.

We appreciate the fact that the staff at the Kea Lani tried to make up for poor service with gifts and credits, but we prefer hotels and resorts that are proactive and don't allow a guest to have a bad experience there.
