Our experience was truly wonderful from the time we arrived to that sad morning we had to leave. My wife and I spent 10 days there, so we had time to try everything available. The grounds are beautifully maintained, as are the rooms. The pools had a little something for everyone, and we opted to hang out at the adult pool, where it was incredibly quiet and peaceful. Nick's is a must for anyone who visits--the crabcakes are fantastic. In addition, a massage at the spa is well worth the hefty price tag. Although some would say that the beach is a but small, the times we went there was always plenty of room. We will definitely opt for the Kea Lani on or next visit!

My family of 7 (4 Adults & 3 Kids) just returned from the Kea Lani and had a great time. Our connecting suites weren't available for the first 2 nights, so they put us up in an oceanfront 2 Bd Villa for 2 days.
Cabanas by the family pool are ofter reserved in advance, so think about it if you want to sit in the shade at the pool (and get a bucket of ice and water bottles brought to you) The suites are large as are the bathrooms. (Note to parents- the showers have no curtains or doors) The staff is very friendly and helpful and full of suggestions. To save money on equiptment rental we brought our own snorkle equiptment and bought sand toys at the K-mart and boogie boards at the supermarket.
Since the suites have a mini-frig and microwave you can pick up snacks and drinks at the supermarket in Kihie

After walking through hotel and grounds in 2001 couldn't wait to stay there. Just returned from 5 nights with 3 children under 10. To be honest, I was a little disappointed. We had to pay extra $$$ to stay in the view room we thought we had originally booked. Aftere the $$$ spent, view was great! Room needed a large overhaul. Bathroom was nice, kids loved the walk in shower, but I found lighting terrible and nowhere to stow bath articles. Closet space very minimal, had to ask for a few extra hangers and closet rod broke! Room definetely needed updating, 'cottage cheese' ceiling, carpets were stained, furniture was worn out. I feel they need to redecorate and it would be perfect! As for the restaurants Nicks Fishmarket was fabulous! Caffe Ciao restaurant and deli were superb! The pool was nothing, kids were bored after one day. One waterslide? If it wasn't for the 'suite' room, I wouldn't even consider staying there again with kids. Next time, get adjoining rooms at the Grand Wailea!

We went on our Honeymon (Feb 2003). Don't pay any attention to the picky people who would complain about receiving a million dollars. The hotel is simply awesome. The beautiful open air lobby was just breath taking. The staff was very attentive anf friendly. They always seemed to know your name. The suites are great. Large balcony. The grounds were well kept and the pools were not over crowded. The beach was small, but not crowded. Calm waters. No real negatives. The food and drinks are expensive there, but that seemed to be the case on the whole island...Drive to the Volcanoe for sunrise (do that on your second day there since you will not be acustomed to the time change), go whale watching, the helicopter tour was awesome and see the lava fields.

Our 4 night stay in early Aug with our 5 and 7 year old kids was pleasant, but overall, I was underwhelmed. The rooms are huge, food and service great. Definitely family-oriented -- kids loved the water slide. The big negative for me -- crowds! The beach area was nice, but strong winds and surf kept most up at the pools, I guess. The family pool area and grounds surrounding it are not that large, and were packed with families wall to wall from 7 a.m. (get out early to reserve your chairs!) I couldn't help but overhear every conversation. It was, at times, almost claustrophobic. We've been to other family-oriented luxury properties that deliver a more tranquil, spread-out experience.

We are repeat visitors to the Fairmont Kea Lani. It's definitely pricey but it's your vacation...if you want to save $ get in the car and go camping. We have two young boys and the hotel suites offer plenty of room for them to run and play AND the separate bedroom offers a little peace and quiet for cocktails, reading, relaxing or TV after they fall asleep. The small refrigerator is great to keep snacks, juice and perishables from the deli and the microwave also comes in handy for heating up a snack for the kids.

Service is superb! Many of the staff greet you by name. The breakfast buffet is a great way to start the day with plenty of options for large and small appetities.

The toddler wading pool is key, especially for those with kids < 2 yrs.
The larger family pool is great for kids, though one will find much more appealing slides and pool features at the Grand Wailea but without the benefit of a hotel suite.

Polo beach is marginal in terms of a vast white sand type of beach but more than enough for young families.

Bottom line: we will be back for more in the future.

The hotel and beach are very attractive and the rooms are quite large, although the decorating is bland and rather cold. The staff are the same - rather distant and unfriendly, unlike the many other Fairmont properties we have visited. There is very little shade on the property.
Cabanas and beach umbrellas must be rented and were all booked by the time we arrived. The food is barely ok and is a rip-off. Example: a poor-quality beach-bar hamburger is $16, with french fies another $5 (cheese is extra too). The level of service is low compared to other Fairmont hotels, such as long waits for pool-side service and no turn-down service. When it was time to leave, I waited half an hour for a bell man and had to haul my luggage to my taxi myself. There are a lot of other good hotels on Maui - skip this one - we certainly will next time.
