We've been to Joes many times and it is reliable for atmosphere, solid food and a semi-outdoor environment. The baby-back ribs are a notch above anywhere else.

Joe's Bar & Grill has the best ribs to be found (coming from a Midwesterner that's saying something)! They are fall off the bone tender, homemade sauce fantastic! Even taking home a doggie bag is wonderful. The atmosphere at Joe's is relaxed and whenever I've visited, the restaurant has had a steady flow of guests. Service has always been excellent as well. Save room for the ice cream pie!

We went for Thanksgiving dinner in 2012. It was fabulous, both food and service. Went once more in Dec 2012. Had the meatloaf. It was ok but not special. Fast forward to 2013. We booked again for Thanksgiving dinner, expecting the same great meal as the year before. Not. The turkey was dry, the green beans were the small dry ones with little flavour you expect to see in cello bags at Costco. We could identify the stuffing, but not some other side dish that my wife thought might include chestnuts. We never saw a written menu at the restaurant but when I looked at the website after it described a sweet potato side with pineapple and streusel topping. Nothing in that side tasted like pineapple or the colour or flavour of sweet potato. At nearly 40 dollars a head per entree plus wine we were expecting something more special, and expressed our disappointment to the manager after she was sent over by our waiter. we said we were especially disappointed in comparison to the prior year. She said it was the same menu and same chef as Thanksgiving 2012. On reflection, it was not the same as 2012, as we would not have considered those veggies and sides special. No adjustment was offered by the manager, but she said she would try out the turkey dinner herself later in the evening and wouldbring our concerns to the owner. As this reservation was made under Open Table, I thought I might hear something further from the restaurant, but a it has been nearly three weeks, I goes not.

So, looking at other reviews it seems that our experience mirrored others, that perhaps depends on the night. At the prices charged, there are a lot better options for a good and consistent meal and it's off our list.

We went out twice to Joe's Bar in Wailea, based on previous reviews about their 2 for 1 offers 530-630pm everyday. I called them up, and made a 530pm reservation, after I had confirmed that they still offered the 2 for 1 special.

First I had to find the place, as Joe's Bar is not located anywhere near the major shopping areas of Wailea. It is located at the Wailea Tennis club, about half way between the Wailea Gateway Center and Shops at Wailea.

You can't see the restaurant from the road, and can't drive there. Instead park your car in the lot with the sign saying Joe's Bar parking. It is the same parking lot for the Wailea tennis club across the street. They will have a golf cart come around, pick you up, and drive down the service road to the restaurant at the bottom of the hill, hidden from view from the main road.

Once we figured this out, the next time, we parked right on the road where there is a steep set of stairs and pathway winding down directly to the restaurant.

So we go in, and as it is only 530pm, the dining area is pretty empty, and we get the choice seats right next to the window on the north side. Windows on all sides of the restaurant, with a view of the sunken tennis court directly to the east. We get a clear view of the sun setting in the west over the ocean. This area fills up fast, and later arrivals don't get a window view.

On our first night here, we both got the prime rib at $38. The prime rib we got was huge -it had to be at least 20 ounces, and was well seasoned with garlic salt , and extremely tender and tasty with very little fat. One of the best prime ribs I've ever tasted, with mashed potatoes and brocolli. $38 for two 20 ounce prime ribs -you can't beat that!

We came back a few days later at 530pm and had the ahi tuna $38 and the scallops with three colors of cauliflower. The pan seared divers scallops at $36 were also huge -about the size of a half dollar coin, and a half inch tall. The ahi tuna at $38 was barley cooked, only seared on the outside, and raw on the inside, as it should be. It was not on the menu, but had to be asked for.

Checking other people's plates, we saw the Island jambalaya $36 with a scoop of white rice, and sausage, shrimp and peppers. Other prominent dishes included huge portions of the Joe's Favorite Meatloaf $26, and Black Market Ribs $29. The next door table had a large portion of pumpkin seeded crusted mahi mahi $36.

We won't be back for several months in Maui, but hope that Joe's bar continues to have their special 2 for 1. It's not listed anywhere on the menu -you have to ask for it.

We changed plans from eating at Spago and decided to go try Joe's. It was our first time eating at any of the much-heralded Bev Gannon's restaurants and it was fine. Granted, it was a comfort food restaurant but the meatloaf and ribs we ordered didn't stand out.
