“Great view, not crowded”
Review of Mokapu Beach

This is a nice beach and offers a tiny bit of shade. Often times you can find a patch of sand to have all to yourself since most people pass this beach up.

The coastal path goes north and south right through it, so if you can't find a spot on Ulua, walk a little further and you will find one on Mokapu.

The wind is often less brutal here. So the swimming is most often calmer. And there are tide pools to explore.

We drove south along the Maui coast looking for the beautiful beaches promised by the guidebooks and ended up here. We started at Wailea Beach, but it was so hot and crowded there that we walked north along the beach path until we ended up here. There weren't a lot of people and there was shade and grass above the beach. My son and I jumped around in the waves for awhile before simply relaxing in the shade. There is a large construction project going on so I'm guessing there will be a new resort and lots of people here soon.

If you find yourself in Kihei on one of those windy days that the sand is just beating against your skin. Hop in the car and go south. Take the South Kihei road until it ends at a round about and park in the little shore access parking there (you will see Ekah Village). It is a simple walk down to the beach and you will already experience much less wind, but if you continue walking south around the rocks, you will be in heaven. Mokapu and Ulua beaches are beautiful and protected from the wind more than the Kamaole beaches. AND there are a lot less people too!

This beach is right in front of the new hotel under construction in Wailea. It is not crowded right now and most people go to the beach right next to it Ulua Beach Park. It's a great beach for families as the water is calm, the snorkeling is good and there are interesting bits of lava rock that pop up and create tide pools. Enjoy it before the new hotel opens!

I actually preferred Mokapu to Ulua even though they are right next to each other. We went during the late afternoon when it was still crowded on Ulua. There appeared to be more space at Mokapu, even though it was front of the hotel. We enjoyed a nice two hours there and lots of photos. Less rocky as well.
