I was blown away my my experience at the Andaz.
The customer service is exceptional: every single staff member to whom we spoke was beyond excellent, going out of their way to be thoughtful and accommodating. This started with an incredibly warm welcome at check in, and continued to everyone on the restaurants, bars, and housekeeping teams.
This is the only resort fee I've ever been happy to pay for: each morning, we had a fantastic free activity that I'd value at over the cost of the fee: the stand up paddleboarding over the reef, outrigger canoeing, and kayaking were all fantastic experiences lead by charming, lovely staff who seemed to really enjoy what their jobs.
We stayed from a Wednesday to a Saturday, so we seemed to avoid most children. (They seem to prefer the bottom pool anyway, leaving the upper two pools to be rather quiet and lovely.)
I do wish the hotel would stop people from grabbing pool chairs at 530am for the day; there should be a policy that says "unattended pool chairs for more than an hour will be cleaned and have their items removed." We got to the pools early each day, but I did see some guests frustrated when there was nowhere quiet left to sit.
The rooms are similar to what you might find at a W Hotel--great, generously sized bath amenities and an awesome shower, with a bed I found comfy--but...I was blown away my my experience at the Andaz.

The rooms are similar to what you might find at a W Hotel--great, generously sized bath amenities and an awesome shower, with a bed I found comfy--but I don't think parents will find the the high end design convenient for kids, or if they brought a lot of stuff. I think that's a good thing--sorry mom and dad, this place should remain an adults-oriented hotel.
That said, our "partial ocean view" room was spectacular, with what I would consider a full ocean view towards West Maui. The in room drinks and snacks were a nice touch, too. I was also a huge fan of the water dispensers near the elevators; no $6 bottled water here!
We booked through American Express fine resorts, which gave us some extra privileges; if you can, I recommend booking this way, too. Specifically, the daily breakfast buffet was free via Amex, except for taxes and gratuity. (The meal would otherwise cost upwards of $70 per person. It is spectacular, better than any high end Vegas buffet I've ever had, but it would be a lot to pay daily.)
The live music during sunset at night outside was an amazing way to end each day.
We love Maui and exploring it, but this hotel just really allowed us to put our feet up, relax, and not leave. It's the perfect size, with spectacular amenities and a best-in-the-biz staff.More
