“Wished I could stay longer”
Reviewed May 15, 2014

Completed a wonderful two-night stay at this hotel. Found it to be everything I was hoping for in a Hawaiian hotel. Arrived and was immediately made a priority during the checkin process, which was a huge plus compared to the chaos of the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu. Was directed to my room and shown all the amenities. Service levels throughout the stay were consistently high beyond one small issue with the minibar that I had cleared before the stay but still needed to make no fewer than five calls over two days to fix.

I used a confirmed suite upgrade to upgrade to the Andaz Suite, which was pretty impressive. The room had a huge outdoor area, with a balcony stretching the entire length of the room. It's a public, shared balcony (others can walk past you to their balcony) and the view I had wasn't the best, but it was a comfortable space with several interesting chairs. The room came with an iPad to control the small stereo in the living room and had a picnic bench, which was useful when I had room service. The bed was sunken and very comfortable. The master bathroom had a reasonably big tub, but even more impressively, the most enormous shower I've ever seen. The bathroom even had a Toto washlet.

The property is beautiful. The center of the hotel is laid out with three cascading pools, the top two of which are infinity pools. Pools were well-maintained and had plenty of chairs. The beach is at the bottom of the property and, while it's not a private beach, it's private enough that it didn't feel crowded or overrun. Hotel set up chairs and umbrellas on demand, and while there's not food/drink service at the beach, that's available by the pools. The hotel's restaurant options were also very impressive, highlighted by the Morimoto Maui restaurant. My only concern would be that most of the hotel was accessed by steps; it might not be the best hotel for somebody with mobility concerns.

I would absolutely stay here again.

Selected Andaz since it was a new property in Wailea and we'd been to The Grand Wailea when the kids were young. Arrival was special with fresh flower lei and an iPad check in instead of a counter. While our room wasn't exactly oceanfront due to the configuration of the hotel and balconies, we did enjoy the view and the extra space. Pools were the best for real swimming and children tended to gravitate to the lower pool which made the lounging areas up top more adult. Pool staff was excellent and attentive. Dined at Morimoto one night and preferred the outdoor seating area to being inside as the restaurant had a bit of a kitchen odor. Great bartender. Ka'Ana Kitchen was amazing food with fresh, local ingredients blended into small dishes so we could do lots of sharing. The only downside to the resort is the small shower area with curtain that allowed splash into the outer area. Hubby kept banging into the soap dish and the small, deep tub seems like a waste of space. Nice products, though.

Room Tip: We enjoyed a deluxe room on the 6th floor (hotel has 7). The higher the number, the closer you are...

Green Features: Very impressed with the Green-ness of the resort. They provide you with a nalgene type bottle upon arrival to eliminate plastic and use email as much as possible for your confirmations and receipts.

Stayed May 2014. Exceptional in every way. The venue itself is beautiful, and the staff makes you feel like a VIP everywhere you go.

Dine at Ka'ana Kitchen - combined with the Andaz experience, you will never want to leave.

This hotel has been open just under a year. It is settled in the luxury corner of Wailea. This is a 5 star resort in every way. The customer service is over the top. The location could not be better. Some of the best golf in the world is across the street. Don't get me wrong this place can be pricey but all the hotels in this corner are. I highly recommend it.

Love the contemporary design and above all location of the Andaz Hotel. From the moment you walk in to the lobby you are greeted immediately and feel like you are in paradise. Great restaurants if you are willing to splurge. Rooms are well designed and very clean. Plenty of lounge chairs by the pools with comfy cushions. The gym is great and you will definitely run into a celebrity as we did. Highly recommend the Andaz!

Let's give them their due on the good.

They have made this a beautiful property with one of the best looking lobbies I have seen anywhere at any beach resort.

The staff are generally very nice - - - though the lobby staff are sometimes difficult to locate.

The Parking / Valet guys are the best.... really nice... really efficient... really courteous, without exception.

Pool staff are nice... when you can find one.... pool service leaves much to be desired.

The rooms LOOK nice .... not very functional or practical (see below)

Not so good....

Restaurants . . . Somehow they are going for the "really different" / "unique" but the variety of food is very very small..... though the restaurant staff are generally very nice and personable.

The dinner menu at the main restaurant is very limited, and the quality of the food does not justify the price. My wife ordered the steak which was mostly gristle, not cooked well (sent it back and it came back re-heated.... not re-cooked). The chicken I ordered was basically very mediocre, soggy fried chicken. The waitress kept describing all the menu items as "fun"..... it wasn't a "fun" experience, and the food was pricey and sent us off to eat at the Four Seasons the remainder of our dinners.

The breakfast menu and buffet is very limited...nice presentation, but very limited. Not worth the $45 price tag.... Again, we ended up at the Four Seasons most mornings

The Japanese restaurant out at the pool area seems to want to be Nobu . . . certainly it is priced like Nobu, but not especially good in either the food or the service categories.... opt for the Four Seasons pool restaurant for a better atmosphere and environment

The rooms are small . . . cute but small.... The Ocean View that we paid a premium for was obstructed by the condo units.... My advice... get the highest floor you can get.

The room is also very quirky with an impossibly small bathroom (closet in the bathroom that you can't really be in if someone is at the sink)....

The shower is awful . . . apparently they removed the hand-held because they have designed the shower with an open space into the sleeping area (it looks nice, but function is non-existent) . . . so you are left to a mediocre pressured rain shower to try to get clean.... a seat in the shower would have helped, as would the non-existent hand-held.

I was disappointed that they didn't disclose that they change the sheets only every three days.... At least disclose this to give the guests a choice. Very sub-par for what should be a nice quality resort.
The balcony furniture is worthless - - - impossible to get comfortable on - - -and hurt my back trying to relax out there for a few minutes.

The screens for the windows are very cool in design, but the insects are not at all deterred by them, and by the second night, we had become the local restaurant rage for anything that flies. Finally, we were required to simply keep the windows closed all the time so we would not be eaten. A shame that we could not enjoy the ocean air.

Although the parking / valet crew is great . . . it would be nice to have a self-park option. I like to come and go freely, and it seems a bit of a burden to not be able to get my car very easily. they can still charge the $30-some odd bucks to park overnight.... that's fine . . . but if I feel like valet, I would like that choice.

The Spa was very nice. ... we did the couple's massage for an hour (at over $650 for an hour massage with tip) twice.... but again..... I think a bit over-priced.... even for a resort. The only thing was that all four therapists we had gave EXCELLENT massages.

Finally, for $750 a night for the hotel with all the things mentioned above, I would opt for a different choice. I wanted to try this place due to the fact that it was new and had all these nice reviews.... but this is more like a basic 3-Star experience that happens to have a really nice ocean location.

Overall.... sorry to be so negative, but I think it's a service to all the TripAdvisor readers to hear the good and the bad. I would have rated this hotel "Average" but for the quirks vs. the price.... it really does not warrant even that rating.

Your mileage may vary.... but be forewarned.

Room Tip: Get a high floor with ocean view .... try not to get eaten - - - maybe consider another property whi...

Green Features: The re-fillable water bottle is a quaint idea . . . but really impractical and annoying having to find a place to re-fill your bottle constantly.... Not a good practice at a luxury resort.

The Andaz Maui featured a wonderful architectural construct, from the moment you enter the outdoor walk that looks all the way through the hotel and out to the sea from the front steps. The casual approach of checking in and meeting with the concierge was refreshing, as instead of a front desk that you stand in line at, you are welcomed to make yourself comfortable in the very spacious lobby and they come to you with Ipad in hand. The staff are very warm and friendly, and we really appreciated the driver service that took us out in the evening to our dinner reservations. The cascading set of infinity pools was a great feature, and just the perfect temperature. My only complaint was that the menu at the Kitchen was great for the breakfast buffet, but otherwise I had difficulty finding anything that I would eat. Still, there were 3 other places to order food. We ate at their Morimoto restaurant twice and it was fantastic! The rooms were nice and spacious and overall the hotel had a vibe of contemporary luxury. I wouldn't recommend it for those who are older and can't handle a lot of stairs though, as it's a long walk up the stairs from the beach, past all those cascading pools and a long winding staircase once indoors. There were a lot of 30 + year old couples, many of whom were new parents with little ones, who loved the bottom "wading" pool. Overall, a really great hotel!
