This beach in Makena State Park, also known as Big Beach, is really just a perfect place to spend the day. The beach is long and wide, with life guards. There are trees at the back for shade, or bring an umbrella. The ocean floor is sandy and it's easy to swim there -- there were lots of families with kids. And if you want you can walk up the path and over the rocks to Little Beach, which is clothing optional. There are porta-potties near the parking area. The day we were there was very cloudy, but we still had a great day.

This is a state park and is very beautiful. The sand is soft and powdery. There seemed to be a little more surf here, good for body surfing. The sand gets very hot and there is not much shade, so you need a chair and an umbrella. You can go down the far end of the beach, climb up the hill to another small beach that seems to be frequented by "free souls". There is a taco stand in the parking lot that has drinks and limited food offerings. Service can be very slow if you are there at noon to two, better choice would be to pack a lunch. Enjoy!!

Bring your beach chairs, an umbrella and a boogie board. This is a beautiful, quiet beach and nice waves. You can park along the road and look for the light green staircase to access the beach. This is a hike down, but worth it. There is some snorkeling there, but more for playing in the waves.

Really nice area with some great beaches. Head down a little further and take a look at Oneuli beach. Amazing black sand and great sunsets as well, with some surprise turtles popping in every now and again.

Staying in South Maui, summertime seems to mean that the west-facing beaches get really windy and choppy in the afternoon (at least while we were there), so coming here in the afternoon was great as it wasn't nearly as windy and the waves were great.

Definitely a different experience from the Wailea and Makena beaches as the surf is much larger here, even in the summer. Great fun playing in the waves. Parking is plentiful. So much beach space, that it can accommodate lots of people without seeming too crowded.
