So much of what you eat here is grown on property or locally sourced. Lovely dining room too

Today my husband and I decided to splurge on calories (and dollars) by having Sunday Brunch at the Makena Beach and Golf Resort as sort of a last hurrah before heading home to the Northwest this week. We made our reservation but went early to maximize our time there indulging. The hostess was on the same wavelength as us because she was writing out our last name on the ticket when we arrived a half hour early. We were promptly seated at our table and the unlimited champagne started flowing. We were inpressed with the quantity and quality and choices of food that we had before us. There were the usual breakfast items one sees at a brunch but also a fresh seafood table with shrimp, crab legs, lox, ahi, four kinds of poke - all you can eat! The lunch items were quite good too - I found a lamb dish that was yummy and a carving station was present but I had no room left to try it. I really thought the sushi was quite good and the dim sum as well. I did manage to eat dessert but that put me over the edge. A little more champagne and we were off - for a nap!

My wife and I ate supper here after discovering the hotel earlier in the holiday when we went for a snorkel tour off the property. We were surprised to be able to get a reservation on short notice. Maybe the weather (nasty 3 day rain storm) had something to do with it? The restaurant is located in the Makena Beach and Golf resort south of Wailea, and offers plenty of glass overlooking the pool and ocean. Unfortunately due to the weather we were unable to take full advantage of those views. perhaps another time...

We were able to come in during their daily happy hour for a few appetizer and drink specials before our meal. Be warned, when they promote 50% off appetizers during happy hour, they forget to mention that they are "sampler size". to be clear, our waitress did tell us when we were ordering that they were a smaller size, but not knowing what you get at regular price, we continued with the order. I guess there is a lesson for us in this.

For instance, the $15 (regular price) grilled Hawaiian shrimp & Pineapple Shishkebab: At half price, you get 1 skewer with two shrimp and two pineapple tidbits, and although they were actually very tasty, it wasn't going to leave anyone "happy" with their choice. Another appetizer we tried was the Thai chicken summer rolls, which was basically one sushi-style chicken roll sliced into three pieces for $5.00. As with the shish kebab, it wasn't too bad.

If you do decide to take advantage of the happy-hour pricing, make sure to order the Bread bowl of wild mushroom dip. It was a good size and was also very delicious. This was one item that I thought was a good deal.

As for the whole dining experience, I would have to say we were satisfied. Food and drink came very quickly, it was quiet, and we often had two wait-staff looking after us. I was and still am a little curious as to why the place wasn't a little busier, as we were 1 of maybe only 15 tables occupied that night. The entire staff was friendly and energetic, always on their feet doing something to ensure the satisfaction of their guests. The food was fresh and delicious, and the restaurant is bright and clean with a great view outside. There are so many fine-dining options in Wailea-Makena, I personally would like to try to get into a few others before coming back here in order to make a fairer comparison. If we aren't able to get to try another restaurant, and needed somewhere to eat in a pinch, I wouldnt hesitate to come back here.
