This was our favorite restaurant on our week long vacation to Maui. The restaurant is surrounded by water, with tiki torches all around so it really feels like an island paradise. My drink came in a coconut which was really fun. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. My husband ordered a steak and I ordered fish. Both dishes were delicious and came out fast. The restaurant is pricey, a dinner for two will most likely be over $100 but it was worth it.

The Humuhumunukunukuapua'a Restaurant is the signature restaurant at the Grand Wialea. It is patterned after a Polynesian Village with a thatched hut look built over the water. There is a great view of the Pacific, a wrap around aquarium and a salt water pool from which you can select your own lobster if that is your dining option. All this is nice but you still have to serve good food and provide good service. The first surprise was that if you make a reservation and do not keep your reservation you will be charged $50.00 for each person on your reservation (not very customer friendly). We had a reservation and showed up on time, the restaurant was not too busy but it still took several minutes to get us to a table. Once seated it took several more minutes for a waitress to come to our table and take our drink order. When we got our drinks the waitress took our dinner menu. We expected to get bread or rolls as we had bread plates but none came. We saw other tables getting bread and guessed they just forgot us. When our entrees came they took away our bread plates to make room on the table. We ordered the Potato Crusted Salmon and the Crispy Hawaiian Snapper. The Snapper was well prepared and was served over a bed of coconut fried rice. It had a meaty texture and was very tasty. The Salmon was served over mushrooms, corn and asparagus but did not come with a starch so we ordered the fried rice as a side dish. The Salmon was ok but since it was served on the rare side (which was ok with me) it had a watery consistency and the flavor was only in the crispy potato coating. It was a little disappointing from such a high end restaurant. For dessert we ordered the Cheesecake Cremeux and the Ice Cream Selection. We waited for over 10 minutes and the waitress kept walking by our table without a word. After about 10 more minutes she came over and said that the person who does the desserts also does the salads and she was swamped (really, at such a high end restaurant I would think anyone could do what needed to be done to get the food out; as a matter of fact different people brought out our entrees). She thanked us for our patience and went on her way. A few minutes later yet another person brought out our desserts. We asked for our check and received it promptly. We paid and after almost two hours we left the restaurant. The food was ok but the service was lacking, not sure if it is a management issue or a staff issue but considering the price we expected better (other reviews also were concerned with the service so I don't think this was an isolated incident). With a number of other options at the Resort and off property, we will probably not try this place again. I generally don't bash a restaurant but if the food is just good and the service is poor but the prices are at the top end others should know this up front.

I wouldn't go back here. Nice service, decent food but far to expensive. I couldn't get beyond the smell of a dirty fish tank. The surrounding water is dirty. Decor is dated. No need to go here for the sunset when you can enjoy it on the beach! I can see why the Grand Wailea gives out gift certificates and free drinks at this restaurant ~ its the only reason we gave it a chance.

The signature restaurant of the Grand Wailea Resort, sits atop a saltwater lagoon, filled with Umilu fish (a salt water version of Koi fish) that the kids can feed. The restaurant's thatched roof and open-air design give this place an especially authentic island feel. But it is the restaurant's location on the ground of the Grand Wailea Resort that provides virtually every customer a beautiful view of the Pacific (and a majestic or even magical view at sunset)! Add to this, a huge wrap-around fish tank by the bar, and the tiki torches and pool setting around the restaurant, and you have a fantastic experience already, before you even order a drink!
Now, many places may let the setting do all the talking, and give up on either the quality of the food or the service. Here, you get it all!
The drinks, while somewhat overpriced (especially for the amount of ice you find in them), are unique, and an especially unexpected, creative surprise. Just do not order too many...
The food, while expensive (although moderate for Wailea resort standards) tends to be worth every penny (with the only caveat being to watch out for the price of the crab - ouch!). The Kobe short ribs were especially decadent and perhaps the best ribs I have ever tasted. Considering the number of patrons there (it was no where near capacity), the service could have been a bit faster, but they are sure Not rushing you out!
Overall, this is a place that would be have to beat, and definitely has 'the full package'!
We will definitely be back...
