Description: Hawaii's first and only Relais & Chateaux restaurant, The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea (formerly known as Capische?) offers a European-inspired elegance infused with creative island-to-table cuisine. Menus are created around what is readily available from Maui’s own farms and fisherman ensuring that each dish is prepared using only the finest local, seasonal and artisanal products; including those grown in the restaurant’s own garden and farming operation. From its perch on the hillside above South Maui's Wailea resort area, the restaurant offers sweeping panoramic ocean views from the upper lanai and intimate dining under the stars in the garden.

“Great sunset view”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

It's location is not on the beach, but it has a commanding view that allows almost the entire restaurant to have a great sunset view. Combined with exemplary service and well prepared food it was a memorable evening.

“Fine dining”
Reviewed May 22, 2013 via mobile

The food was good though not spectacular. Beautiful setting. We ordered a bottle of wine at $49 which we thought good value until we saw the size...half bottle didn't look at that never having bought half bottle before! Nice treat but then most of of Maui restaurants have beautiful settings so not hard to find this and would not go there just for this. Staff friendly enough but then again we haven't been anywhere with bad service. Portions are small but that is what you get with fine dinning. If you like quality over quality at a price of $45/50 main meal then go.

“The View is the Best Thing Here.....”
Reviewed May 16, 2013

Capishe sits in a spectacular location at the Hotel Wailea. Everything about the place is beautiful, including the views from the bar and the lanai. While we did not sit in the garden area, it also looked beautiful from the lanai above, with private, romantic seating options. Now, the food, service and overall experience: We booked this restaurant with full knowledge that even by Hawaii standards, it’s expensive. However, based upon a recommendation by a personal friend, we decided it would be great to experience it.

Food:
For 2 of us, we shared three different items from the menu: Heirloom Haiku Tomato Caprese, Mushroom Truffle Risotto and Veal Chop, Marsala style. It was all very tasty although the risotto and the marsala sauce were quite salty. I make special note of this because I tend to over-do salt because I like salt; if I think it’s salty, it’s definitely too much! The veal chop was perfectly cooked, and our waiter explained that the chop is cooked sous vide style and then finished off on a grill. I will note here that this was more than enough food for 2 people to share (and then some), but more about that as it relates to service. By Hawaii standards, all the dishes were more expensive than food at the Four Seasons Maui restaurants. There is a price to pay for the spectacular setting.

Service:
Here’s the main reason that I’m giving a rating of 3 rather than 4 (and only 4 would have been warranted due to the over-saltiness of the food). Our waiter, while attentive, seemed more interested in upselling and inflating the bill rather than providing an experience that truly met our needs. He was very clear that the prosecco would be better with an added aperitif (which I did not enjoy). When asked about the sharing of the items, his response was “the chef has prepared all portions so that they’re better enjoyed as a primi and secondi experience”. Despite my being clear that we do not enjoy large portions, he was adamant that a 10 ounce veal chop and a full portion of risotto was not meant to be shared. This was tiresome and his demeanor was somewhat condescending.

Bottom line:
Beautiful setting, above average food, all served up with a bit of attitude which left us feeling that it wasn’t about us, it was about the server’s revenues for the evening. We chose this restaurant over Ferraros at The Four Seasons, which has a great beach-side setting and great food at a better price point. We won’t return to Capische.

“Gorgeous view, so-so food”
Reviewed May 14, 2013

The view is lovely, the breezes are refreshing, and the setting could not be more lush. Set up on a hill overlooking Maui and the ocean, Capische is in a hotel (in the midst of conversion to condos) which feels more Polynesian than Hawaiian - which is to say open air, thatched roof, dark tiles, etc. The service was lovely and I so wanted it to be a 5 star experience but the food, in our opinion, was overly salted and relied too much on butter and salt in lieu of truly good flavors. I had the beet salad to start, the gnocchi for my 2nd dish, and the snapper for my entree. The second two dishes were too salty to consume. My husband had the caprese salad (good), the risotto (salty), and the tuna (very unusual preparation which was very heavy - not how raw tuna is meant to be served?). We enjoyed the setting but would not return for the food.
