“Don't Expect Hilton Honors Treatment!”
Reviewed September 23, 2009

Recently returned from a 7-night stay at the Grand Wailea (supposedly a Hilton property, and therefore, subject to Hilton Honors amenities for qualified Diamond Members!) My fiance and I booked a leisure trip to Maui, and specifically inquired about Diamond Member privileges from both the Grand Wailea and Hilton Honors before booking our stay. We were assured there would be the usual complimentary light breakfast and happy hour drinks and hors' d'oeuvres in the Honors' Lounge from both parties. Imagine our surprise upon check-in when we were advised by a manager that no such amenity exists at this property. They may be owned by Hilton, but they don't treat Hilton's Diamond members as such. Now, we did not book this hotel for frees snacks, but we were cashing in almost 300,000 points, and had we been properly advised upon booking, we might have chosen the Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island, instead (which, by the way, is a fabulous property!) We were given a token coupon for a free bottle of champagne at one of the restaurants on property, instead. Frustratingly, even our call to Hilton's 800 number was not returned until one week later, as we sat in the airport for our return flight!
Despite this awkward launch to our vacation, we still enjoyed the property. We are avid swimmers, and loved the beach and ocean the hotel faces. We ate off-property a lot in local spots to avoid the obvious "touristy" vibe, but we did dine one night at the restaurant on property : it starts with an "H", and is one of those names with about 17 letters, and far too difficult for a haole to pronounce! (:
Rooms are clean, service in general is pretty good. Just don't expect Honors' privileges! Beautiful setting and location. But after this, I think we're switching to Marriott!

I’d like to thank mascarahead for choosing to redeem her Hilton HHonors points at Grand Wailea, and happy that she enjoyed her vacation. We understand that HHonors members save their points for vacations as such and we do everything we can to make sure they have a wonderful experience as we do with all our guests. I would like to clarify that Grand Wailea does provide the proper HHonors Diamond On-Property Benefits as outlined on the HHonors guide and website. Note that complimentary breakfast is a benefit at Hilton Garden Inns and other select hotels, but not at any of The Waldorf Astoria properties. This is clearly stated on HHonors membership website.

our stay was lovely - the amenities were wonderful and the restaurants very good. We stayed on a club floor that gave us access to the private breakfast lounge. The shopping is quite good for a hotel, if pricey. But the Shops at Wailea are down the road. The only thing that kept this from being excellent is that we couldn't arrange a late check out. With our flight leaving in the evening that would have been a good thing. We had to pack up and drive around with our suitcases in the trunk all day on the last day of our visit.

I sponsored an investment conference here, so I worked extensively with hotel staff from many functional areas including reservations, accounting, sales, catering, so my opinion is from a corporate angle rather than leisure travel angle. As a hotel for leisure travelers, I would recommend this property. It has many wonderful resort amenities like a large swimming pool, beauitful beach, large and grand public areas, numerous restaurants, etc. As a business hotel, I found there to be too many inconsistencies of quality with some of the banquet food at various conference meals, errors in accounting, attention to client servicing, conference room floorplan requirements. I might come back here to vacation with the family but never again to hold a conference or business meetings. Keep in mind this hotel is large and sprawling so be prepared to get turned around at night while walking the grounds and expect a lot of walking. In all fairness, if you have children, they will think they've found heaven at the Grand Wailea. If it were just my wife and me, we will probably stay at the Four Seasons next door on a future trip.

I just returned from my honeymoon. We stayed at the Grand Wailea for 9 nights. It is gorgeous. Beautiful location, gorgeous hotel, nice staff. Many of the people on staff told us that they are very slow there, and were grateful to have us there. Four days into the trip, a convention of direct marketing came in...about 300 people. The hotel could not handle it. We waited 45 minutes for the buffet, and it wasn't that there wasn't enough seats...just not enough people to seat us! They ran out of food...this was 3 days in a row. Kind of incredible. Other than that, the spa was first-rate and the grounds were impeccable.

I cried when I left. It was AMAZING. The best hotel & staff I have ever had the luxery of experiencing. I can not wait to go back. We stayed in a Presidential Suite with an ocean view for 7 days, and got married in a rainforest in Hana. Do yourself & your family a huge favor & stay here, in any room. Trust me, it's well worth the money.

My partner and I travel to Hawaii every year. We always visit Kauai and one other island. This year it was Maui. We returned to the Grand Wailea - where we stayed 2 years ago. We really enjoyed our visit. We had a great rate and a great room.
It was our 8th anniversary. The hotel upgraded us to a ocean view room and gave us a coupon for a free bottle of champagne. As a silver member of Hilton HHonors, I was given a $40 certificate for use in the restaurants. Very, very nice.
The rooms are very nice. Seem up to date with anything you need. We had one issue - the toilet kept running. After several visits from their engineer - no luck - so we just jiggled the handle and dealt with it. Just like home.
We were at the hotel over Labor Day weekend (checked out on Tuesday after Labor Day). What a great time for those of us without kids to visit HawaiI! The first few days, the adult pool was key to our enjoyment. Every once in awhile someone under 18 would venture over and within 15 minutes a very kind security officer escorted them to the other, more appropriate pool. (Thank you!)
Very close to Kihei for great breakfast spots and grocery stores. We bought snacks and brought them and sodas to the pool versus paying the very, very high drink prices (over $10 for a drink at the pool?!?).
The spa is amazing. The loofa scrub and baths before and after my massage was amazing. I did it two years ago and forgot how good it was. The prices for the spa were a bit high - but with the scrub and baths, totally worth it.
Fitness center is great too. Classes for $10 is a great deal. Very clean gym. Staff was very friendly in the fitness center.
Staff at the hotel were great. Everyone friendly. Everyone says hello in the hallways and smiles at you. Something so basic, but means alot!
I would return to this hotel in a heartbeat. I was worried about it after reading other reviews and am very glad we had such a great experience. Probably was a good week to visit (hotel was at 50% occupancy....)!
Maui continues to be very expensive ... 40 cents more for a gallon of gas than on Kauai.... but we really enjoyed ourselves....
We did the Haleakala bike ride (Haleakala Bike Company in Haiku - do not recommend using them...) which was ok. I would recommend only for a nice day (we had bad weather) and wouldn't recommend using Haleakala Bike Company (broken bike and they seemed to care less....)
Aloha!
