Expected a much higher end clientele (or at least, higher end "looking" clientele. Sometimes felt we were at a Holiday Inn or some such hotel instead of a high end property. Nothing average about the prices, however. Hotel is spottily maintained and often floors are dirty; rooms are clean but tired looking. Walking around you would pass sloppily dressed individuals with poorly supervised kids. The girl at the pool activities desk told me to return the towels at the end of the day; I informed her that for > $900/night (for the Napua tower room) the staff could get the towels themselves. Smoking allowed at the pool despite almost every other lounge chair occupied by a child. Hotel has a rule that you are not allowed to claim lounge chairs which is ludicrous; eveyone does it. Cabanas are $200 /day and for that you are given a map as to it's location; no personal escort by a staff member. Complaints are endured by the staff but don't appear to be taken too seriously. Pool staff looks bored and un-interested; concierge staff is hit and miss as to the type of help and info you will get. Beach was beautiful; you get your own chairs and non one bothers you. Pools/water slide system, giving credit to the the hotel, were clean, considering the vast number of users. Saw a staff individual at the coffee shop mixing salad with her bare fingers. My daughter slipped on a marble stairway going to the ballroom (it was wet) and almost seriously injured herself. Staff did nothing after I informed them of the incident.
If you want personalized, "customer comes first" attitude, with a high class, spotless environment, stay at the Four Season next door.

We loved our stay here enormously! In fact, we cannot wait to go back and tell others about it all the time. It was our perfect hawaiian experience. Even better than the Princeville on Kauai (very stuffy and snobby and UNfun).

The room was beautiful with an awesome view, we had turndown service with a flower every night, they cleaned our bathroom and replaced our towels about twice a day. Our items were never touched and the valet service was fast and nice! The restaurants are a rip-off, BUT everyone has to try just one. The pool was amazing. There is an adult only pool (the hibiscus pool on all the postcard pictures) perfect for honeymooners or active, friendly adults, alike.

The breakfast in the mornings was okay. It was good and the food changed everyday, but they didn't have anyone making special pancakes or french toast (that is sort of being spoiled though). Good jam on the tables.

The beach is great. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND STAYING IN THE KIHEA AREA!!!!!! We went to Kihea every night - there is great night life there. The beaches are best in this area too, and there are NO TOURISTS from CRUISE SHIPS like on the western shore. WAILEA ROCKS!

The whole lobby is open concept with marble floors. There is water and waterways throughout. The lush gardens and walkways are neat, filled with the sounds of waterfalls.

THIS IS THE BEST EXPERIENCE WE EVER HAD! We paid for it, but it was well worth it 100%!

We stayed at the Grand Wailea for a family wedding. We had several rooms in the hotel and you can tell that at one time this was a four star hotel, but it is not at the moment. The grounds and the lobby are beautiful but there are problems with the rooms and the service. Our room had a smell of mildew and it wasn't until the third call to housekeeping that they really addressed the issue. There was never an offer of moving us and we had to indure cleaning the carpet and a carpet dryer and it still did not fix the problem. My sister had a plumbing problem in her room and they were slow to fix it and another person in our party had their room robbed. The staff in the spa and the bell staff were very nice. The staff in the food areas were slow and not always friendly. It seems that they are not spending the money for enough staff and for basic maintenance of the hotel. My sister's wedding in their chapel was beautiful, but that did not makeup for all of the other problems. I would never stay at this hotel again there are too many other nice ones to stay in in Maui.

In my opinion, this hotel is one of the top 3 on the island, and has the best spa and fitness facilities on the island.

The grounds are absolutely stunning and are impeccably maintained. The hotel has collections of very unique, interesting art. The pools are fantastic. It is situated on one of the best beaches of the island. The service is also very good.

In comparison to the two other top hotels on the island (Four Seasons and Fairmont), the hotel leaves a bit to be desired--although the Grand Wailea does not charge as much as these two hotels. The Grand Wailea's rooms are not as large as its competitors' rooms, and the dining is not quite as good. Perhaps if we had paid for the Grand Wailea's club floor we would have been more impressed with the accommodations. The bathrooms were showing their age where we stayed. (But again we only paid about $300 per night when I think the 4 Seasons charges much more).

We'd go back for the right price. We just wouldn't eat there much.

Our family stayed at the Grand Wailea for 7 days and absolutely felt like royalty. From the moment we arrived, the staff was very professional and courteous, always referring to us by Mr. or Mrs. and our last name. The grounds are just beautiful, full of lush landscapes, vibrant art, statues, water, water and more water!!! Everywhere you look, there is water in some form, whether it be a waterfall or one of the beautiful pools.
If you have young kids, stay on the ground floor near the pools. Near the pools is where the kids will want to be, and that's the best location if you want quick and easy access to the pools. We stayed near Humu Humu restaurant. The room's patios open up to the beautifully landscaped grounds. You can walk right out the patio sliding door and over to the pool area within minutes. We were in room 0052. I recommend a room numbered in the 0060's. They were even closer to the pool areas.
Our boys are ages 4 and 10. There was plenty for both of them to do. They were never bored. They wanted to be at the pools from the time the waterslides opened, which is at 10:00 a.m., and they wanted to leave when the slides closed, which is at 6:00 p.m. I was really impressed at how well the staff monitored "outsiders" getting into the pool areas. There are pool attendants posted at most of the pools and waterslides, and they really monitor those who are not wearing the bracelet of the day. Each day all guests using the pool areas must have a colored bracelet on. Anyone found not to have the colored bracelet on is immediately asked their room number, and if they don't come up with the right number they are asked their last name, and if that doesn't match up with their computer's data they are asked to leave the pools. I saw people from other hotels sneaking in to take advantage of the pools and waterslides at our hotel, only to be spotted without a bracelet and asked to provide proof of residency. All the kids really seemed to enjoy the bracelets, most of them displaying a different bracelet for all the days they'd been at the hotel. Some of the kids' arms looked like little rainbows with all the different bracelets lined up. The bracelets also sort of make you feel as though you belong to a private club for the time you're there. You can spot the Grand Wailea folks a mile away with the bracelets lined up their arms. The bracelets are a really cute idea, not to mention it really keeps the crowds down at the resort. We were literally asked by "outsiders" if they could have our room number so that they could swim in the pools that day. Of course we said "sorry, but nope."
As far as meals, we enjoyed breakfast at the Grand Dining Room. The buffet was excellent, very convenient location, a great place to fuel up for the energy it takes to run after the kids all day at the pool. Lunch at the Volcano Bar was pretty good. Pretty pricey too!!! A small salad was $12.00. The smoothies at the Volcano Bar were all yum. Dinner was our time to go out and explore the island. We ate in Kihei a lot. Kihei is a cute little town with a lot of restaurants all in a row. Maui Tacos was a hit with the kids, very tasty. We tried Mama's Fish House in Paia. Very good, but very expensive. We did not try Humu Humu, after reading a pretty bad review. Had our pixs developed at a place in Kihei called Paradise Photos on Kihei Rd. If you have a digital camera, go there. They know what they're doing, if you're just trying your camera out and need a little tutoring. The pixs were great quality. Try the fried ice cream at Maui Sweet Spot in Kihei. Hawaiian made ice cream was really tasty.
Back to the subject at hand. The Grand Wailea was a special treat, a great place to wash away the world's troubles, if only for a week. Time flew, and before we knew it we were back in Orange County, California. Glad to be home safe, but treasuring the memories made at the Grand Wailea.

I'm writing this in appreciation of all the posts that helped us have a wonderful vacation in Maui last week.

The Wailea exceeded our expectations as a property. The gardens, art and pools are all first rate. I will forever be a goddess to my 8 and 10 year olds for booking the room.

We too ate at the Grand shops, loved Cheeseburgers, Maitais and Rock and Roll for a quick lunch and to get them out of the sun. We also visited the ABC stores there for a few snacks and bottled water.

The cafe was great for a pre-pool breakfast, my son loved the pourtugese sausage burrito and the fresh fruit bowl was amazing.

The beach was beautiful.

Some minor complaints, our bill had a $30.00 charge for a roll away bed we never ordered. It was easily fxed with a call to the desk. The room, smelled of mold but it wasn't unbearable, honestly, I'm not sure if this is "acceptable" because of the humidity or not. We were in the ballroom wing if that helps you avoid this in the future.

All in all, it was a dream vacation and I'm glad we stayed at the Grand Wailea.

For others planning a trip, we also enjoyed Mama's Fish House. We took the Four Winds Molokini cruise, for inexperienced snorklers it was perfect.

The only other mistake I think we made was renting snorkle gear, we could have bought it for less and we didn't use it as much as we thought (the boat supplies equipment so it was only used for beach snorkling).

I am in the hospitality business and have stayed at some wonderful Hotels & Resorts around the world over the past 20 years. This was my first visit to Grand Wailea and it is one of the most beautiful and all encompassing resorts I have found......It has lovely gardens, numerous peacefull waterfalls interwoven with unique artwork and great pools with lots of watersports....The property is large and spread out, but it never felt as there were alot of people around.....and the kids that were running around seems to be having a great time.......wish I could have stayed longer......but, I know I will be back!!!
