This resort is NOT for everyone. It is a mega resort. Incredible pools, beautiful grounds, fabulous location and loaded with tourists. If you want to go play with the kids in one of the best pools anywhere, don't miss this resort. If you want romance and luxury, go to the Four Seasons or Kea Lani next door. We had a an oceanview room which was nicely appointed. Very large bathroom with separate tub/shower. Fully stocked mini bar that is sealed(nice if you have little ones!) Refrigerators are available for an extra fee. Matter of fact everything comes with an extra fee but if you choose to stay at this type of resort, expect it. The restaurants are overpriced and mediocre but the ambience is hard to beat! The spa is incredible(expensive) but lives up to the expectation. Staff was courteous, rooms were clean, beach is nice but not exceptional. Expect to walk 10 minutes to get to the beach, pool, restaurants, etc. Like I said mega resort. Enjoy the resort for all it has to offer but just be prepared to pay!

When we arrived, we were absolutely taken by the lobby. It is beautifully decorated and open to the elements with a spectacular view of the ocean. The staff were friendly and very attentive to all our needs. I would highly recommend a treatment at the spa, my 80 minute massage was amazing and the facility is as well. We had a wonderful meal at the Humu Humu Nuku Nuku restaurant one night and enjoyed lounging at the adult only pool during the day. All in all, a delightful experience...can't wait to come back!

My family (wife & 3 children 17, 12, & 10) had great time and didn't want to leave! Our stay started with a lei greeting, and an upgrade to Napua Towers (i'm a HiltonHHonors Diamond member. I paid for first night and then used points for next 2 nights). We utilzed the Executive Lounge for breakfast and evening snack (sometines meal). There was no nickel & diming. The staff brought chairs out to us on the beach and umbrellas at no charge. The staff didn't ask but I tipped them for their effort. The staff around the pool was very friendly, as well as the wait staff at the cafe. The front desk staff was friendly and knowledgable. They let us use a room upon departure as a hospitality suite to shower up before our flight.
We have stayed at the Four Seasons on the Big Island, but found this property to be better! We recommend this to all.

Stayed here with a company do for 5 days in March. Very nice as ever, as was here last year. Stayed in a twin with my mate. Everything was good but be aware that the hotel bar closes at between 11 - 12 at night - not late!!

Pools were all open - a little bit of work going on around the grounds but not too bad.

A little dated at this stage tho

They may recommend an Italian restaurant to you - forget the name but mis-spelt - don't bother - very over rated and not that great

Go for the lava flow cocktail in the hotel - excellent!!

Be ware of the smoking issues in Hawaii tho - they are draconian to say the least - not just specific to the hotel

We love to travel,My husband and 2 kids have travelled all over the U.S,over to Europe and South Pacific..We usually stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kauai,Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island, and Westin Maui..5 yrs ago we decided to stay at the Grand Wailea in April 2004..We had a great time, met lots of travellers from around the world whom we keep in contact with. The pool was spectacular, the staff were remarkably beautiful people whom always seemed happy. We have returned every year since that stay. Our Dining experiences at Humuhumu is always phenominal. They have a wonderful kids club staff. We have been to alot of luxury resorts, however Grand Wailea remains on our TOP list. You dont always find luxury resorts with such an atmosphere of LOVE or ALOHA.I want everybody to know that if you want a happy family vacation, always go with the Grand Wailea. The Spa is spectacular.Everything is HEAVENLY..

We are a family of 4 with kids 10 and 11 years old. We were in the Napua tower, great room size and lanai, great breakfasts and appetizers too. The hotel is spread out and there are lots of places to walk and hang out. The pool was fantastic with the waterslides and lazy river. Our kids loved the beach as you could simply play in the waves, or rent kayaks, go snorkling etc. The staff at the Grand were exceptional and very friendly and they were always attentive. Smiles and Aloha from everyone all day! Adults feel the luxury and the kids can be kids here. Everything here is easy to do. Sure it is expensive but it's all relative and we were more than satisfied with the hotel for the money! We are extremely picky and have nothing to say but good things about the Grand Wailea!

Just returned yesterday from a weeks stay at the Grand Wailea - took my 11 year old for her spring break. I am a hotel snob and was very happy with the Grand Wailea. This was our first visit to this property. I had stayed at the Ritz in Kapalua previously at the other end of the island - I like the Wailea area much better. We booked the least expensive category room and received a nice (complimentary) upgrade to a pool view/partial ocean view room in the Lagoon wing. We found the room and bath to be spacious and luxurious. The feather beds were quite welcoming after 14 hours of traveling - nice linens as well. We enjoyed the separate shower, soaker tub, island fragrance bath amenities and large bath sheet towels in the bathroom. Maid service was excellent & efficient while we were at breakfast each morning - and dinner for trundown time in the evening. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast the first morning but settled on the quick service Cafe Kula for the following breakfasts. We miss the locally made bagels - try the coconut or pineapple toasted with guava jam - Yummy! The food is ridiculously expensive but it is simply this way at all top rated hotels in Hawaii. The pool and beach were the real draw for our spring break trip. We loved every aspect of the pools - all the slides, rope swing, water elevator, swift moving canyon, lazy river and swim up bar. We enjoyed delicious burgers poolside several days. The hotel offers poolside activities for a fee that my daughter enjoyed such as Puka Shell necklace making and lei making. They also offer a spa cabana that offers manicures, pedicures & hair wraps/braids pool/beach side.
I enjoyed walking on the path that runs between all the Wailea hotels along the beach daily - great whale watching from this path. There are a few hotels along the walking path that offer beverages, coffee, breakfast treats for sale. We really enjoyed lunching over at the Four Season's a few days - treat yourself to the beautiful view and a delicious lobster sandwich at their poolside grill. You may even see a celebrity or two - we did!
Some recommendations:
Whale Watching tour with "Pacific Whale Foundation" - visit their website for more info. They run a great, informative tour and have a wonderful gift shop at their Ma'alaea harbor location.
"Maui Ocean Center" at Ma'alaea Harbor - Hawaii's aquarium is super for all ages and they have another great gift shop.
"Hula Cookies" in this same shopping center at Ma'alaea - to die for cookies with Island ingredients, local Roselani ice creams and shave ice. Try an ice cream sandwich made with chocolate chip mac nut cookies and kona coffee or coconut ice cream in the middle. YUMMY!
2 restaurants not to miss are:
Stella Blue's in the Azeka Plaza in N. Kihei (10-12 minutes from hotel). The locals eat here and they have 3 meals a day here - delicious and fairly priced.
"Mama's Fish House" in Paia (30-40 minutes from hotel) - simply don't miss this splurge - incredible fresh fish, fantastic tropical libations and a beachside location. This will be a memorable dinner for all - they do have a children's menu. Make reservations online at opentable.com - highly recommend the 5pm to 5:30pm time frame so you can enjoy the ocean view before it gets dark.
"Shops of Wailea" adjacent to the hotel (walk or drive). Luxury shopping & dining along with more budget friendly shopping & dining. Enjoy souvenir shopping at Whalers General Store or ABC Store and ice cream at Lappert's. They also have complimentary hula dancing & music some nights.
Self park in the Makena deck by using your room key card.
Enjoy your trip to Hawaii. Aloha!
