“Beautiful Hotel”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

This hotel literally took our breath away when we pulled up to it. It is so grandiose and impressive- the whole open air entryway and they greeted us immediately with leis, we felt like royalty! The hotel was practically empty when we were there which was nice. The hotel itself is a maze of jungles and rooms. We stayed on the chapel side with an ocean view- it was a gorgeous view of the beach and grounds, with the chapel right outside. The downside to our room was that the room went up to a pool of sorts with koi fish and a waterfall- gorgeous in the day- at night, the frogs/bugs come out and were so insanely loud! Ugh. We didn't get good sleep there to say the least. The pool in and of itself is amazing here- lazy rivers, bars, a water elevator, beach walk-in, hot tubs, so much to do! We didnt realize the cool stuff is only open so long though- we snuck in a slide and a drink at the bar before they shut it all down. I was sad that they didn't annouce that or something, I would have run up to the water elevator to check that out! The concierge there was amazing- they hooked us up with everything we did on Maui. They were very nice. The restaurants here are nice too- we didn't try them all ( a bit too pricey), but we went to Humu Humu and the food was pretty damn good :) We didn't get to test their luau as we weren't around the day it is held, but we did the neighboring hotel's and it was fun. Not much in the Wailea area, but it is within walking distance of the shops at Wailea which is all upscale stores. My biggest complaint about this place was we felt like the maids/cleaning people were harassing us- they came to the room like 4 times a day! Constantly asking if we needed anything or to turn down the bed, close the shutters, etc. Nice but annoying. After the first day we just put up the do not disturb all day.

Room Tip: Ask for ocean view- so worth it!

I'm a member at Grand Wailea. Over the past few years, I've noticed this hotel deteriorate in aesthetics, exclusivity of membership and service.

The common areas, spa and rooms at this hotel are in need of renovation. When we checked into our room, the air conditioner wasn't working properly, the commode didn't flush regularly and the screen door leading to the balcony fell as we opened it. Management did relocate us but it wasn't immediately.

We stayed in the Napua Tower, on a concierge level. The rooms are slightly larger than standard rooms but it's farther from the beach. They provide a good breakfast and light hors d'oeuvres and drinks at 5 PM. They don't offer bottled water or soft drinks troughout the day. Be advised that the rooms face an open atrium. On the first floor of this atrium there's a bar that plays loud music at night. The music resonates all the way up to the seventh floor.

The pool area is nice but lacks shade. They have a handful of umbrellas to make room for the many cabanas that rent for $400-$1,500 PER DAY!

If you desire an umbrella, be prepared to wait in line at 6:30-6:45 AM during the busy season. Pool opens at 7:00 AM. When they open the pool, it's literally a race to get to the few umbrellas that are available. It's quite a spectacle!

Since this resort caters to families, management should consider providing more complimentary shade for their guests.....specially given that they are already paying a hefty nightly fee, resort fee and perhaps a valet fee as well.

If you prefer the beach, the hotel provides lounge chairs and umbrellas. The line starts forming around 6:30-6:45 AM. The check in desk opens at 7:00 AM. Chairs and umbrellas will be set up for you once you show proof of check in. They go fast so I would advise getting there early if you want a good spot on the beach.

The restaurants are poor and overpriced. We dined at most of them but opted to go to adjacent properties or Kihei. If you like Sushi, I would recommend Sansei in Kihei. For Italian, Ferraros at Four Seasons.

The pool menu is limitted, and expensive. Small specialy drinks (Mai Tai, Daiquiris, etc) will run $15+, beer $10, a small plate of nachos $17 and a small salad $18.

The location of this hotel is very nice. It's situated on a beautiful beach and adjacent to a small, quaint shopping area. This shopping area offers two small convenience stores, restaurants and clothing stores.

I hope this review will not only help the reader but also management at the Grand Wailea. It would be nice to see this property return to the gem it once was!

This has to be on a bucket list of places to stay. The Hawaiian culture with elegance. Our rooim had a view over the Ocean and pools - they were exceptional and the water elevator really gave the kids (their older) a thrill. Dinner in the restaurant over looking the ocean and water feature was also brilliant.

We will be back.

Loved the grounds, loved the amazing staff, loved Humhumu; however, we upgraded to be in the tower, and the lobby bar was very loud until about 10pm. There were also housekeeping carts going up and down outside our room. It was hard to get our son to sleep, and with out little guy waking up early, we wanted to turn in early too, but had a hard time. I'm not sure the tower's happy hour and continental breakfast made up for the noise. We loved the breakfast buffet though, best on the island. We were surprised that the water slides didn't open until 10am. Our boy is too young to care, but kids were pacing impatiently, so excited to go on the slides. We loved our spa treatment, hour in the soaking pools and then a couples massage.

Room Tip: Avoid the tower! We were on the 8th floor, loved our view and large balcony and bathroom, but it was...

I spent 3 nights here and loved it!! This resort seems very large; the entrance foyer is very big and grand with shallow pools and tiled floors. I had not been to Maui before and this was the perfect hotel for a first timer.
It is expensive but the cross section of eating options were varied prices and we felt that we could decide what our budget.
We didn't find any need to leave the resort during our stay ; there was plenty to do in the resort. We loved the ocean kayaking, there was no marked zone within which to kayak and we were free to explore as far as our comfort zone would allow. The beach is fine sand. And the pools are gorgeous, especially nice is the adults only pool area.
Our room was a good size, even though it was a standard room. The bed was very comfortable. Everything was clean and nice.
I would definitely go back...I might even take my children next time :-)

Room Tip: The resort is vast try and get rooms nearer the elevators

The Grand Wailea was a beautiful resort with a great beach. We were welcomed with leis and the open-air main floor is just gorgeous. Our girls also really oved the pools. The downside about the pools, though, is that despite a supposed one-hour limit to holding the lounge chairs there was frequently none available near the pools. That is, unless you wanted to reserve a cabana at a hefty/per day charge.

Speaking of the cost ... be prepared to pay more than the mainland and more than a lot of other Maui hotels. The hotel was very expensive to begin with and we were aware of that, but after paying $700/ night for a room, we were disappointed to learn that we had to valet park our car at an additional cost of $30/day and were automatically charged a $25/day resort fee. You would think that with the cost of the room being as high as it already was, that the "resort fee" would be included. Additionally all the restaurants were very expensive. Had a fairly unremarkable lunch for four at a cost of $150.

The room was very nice, with a lanai overlooking the chapel, and a small view of the ocean. The bathroom was nice and large and the beds were comfortable.

We frequently travelled off the resort to activities around the island and frequently the activities we were interested in were at the other side of the island and we were often traveling 45-60 minutes away from the resort.

The last item to mention is that one day when I was on the beach I overheard the resort beach worker being advised by someone from a neighboring resort that there had been a sighting of a shark in the nearby waters. I watched to see what the worker would do and he did contact someone on his walkie talkie, but eventually he just went back to clearing away the chairs and umbrellas (as it was towards the end of the day). I stayed around a little while to see if he would warn the guests who were in the water, but he didn't do so while I was there. I later learned that earlier that week a German tourist had one of her arms bitten off by a shark. This part of my experience there was particularly disappointing. I only hope that they warned the beach guests of the potential danger sometime after I left the beach. I don't know if they did this or not.
