Grand Wailea - A Waldorf Astoria Resort

The resort at Grand Wailea is amazing! it really is hard to describe. make sure to check out all the photos. we had a garden view room in the back of the resort close to the highway, and it was still wonderful, quiet and we could still hear the ocean.
The gardens are some of the best I have ever seen. I loved to walk thru and find a new place to sit at many of the benches along the paths. gorgeous ponds and koi abound. plumeria trees everywhere! smelled heavenly.
The pools are also gorgeous. and many to choose from. water slides, a water elevator, swim up bars, and adult only pools all with a view of the pacific.
The beach in front of the hotel is perfect to swim in and we rented eqquiptment from the gear shack to go snorkel with the turtles! lots of them! The guys at the gear shack where super helpful and friendly! they would see you come in with a kayak and run 5o yards to come meet you and help you in!
We ate breakfast in our room, (coffee and cereal with fresh pinapple), lunch by the pool, and dinner in town, or at one of the onsite restaurants. We would try to eat only one meal out a day to save money.
We would love to go back!

We stayed here last year whilst on our Honeymoon. Sadly we weren't left as impressed as we had hoped we would be, the biggest let down were the staff....

We had heard great things about the Grand Wailea (GW) after my wife's parents had stayed there before (that said it was around 10 years ago, things must have changed since then in the running of the place).

As another reviewer stated, GW markets their hotel as a 5-star property (they use the Waldorf Astoria name, and their $800-$1000/night prices place them in the luxury category).

We had come straight from the Big Island where we had stayed at and got married at the Four Seasons Hualalai which by the way is without a doubt the best "luxury" resort in the Hawaiin islands hands down (from our experience anyway - perfect in every way). Perhaps staying at the GW after there didn't help....

Our overall experience was average at best, and is some area's very below average / unacceptable (room noise / staff) which isn't what you expect when you're paying so much money to stay somewhere, don't get my wrong the grounds at GW are fantastic however from our bad experiences it's just not worth the money.

Our main issues whilst we stayed there:

STAFF - From our arrival we felt that the staff were so disingenuous / fake, and the valet guys are the worst. It's so so unbelievably obvious that they are only interested in your tips and don't care about being helpful or friendly, they are like hawks out at the front of the hotel. One day towards the end of our stay I didn't have any spare cash to tip one of the guys as I only had larger notes on me and after that it felt like we were black marked by the entire crew so much that when we checked out, no one even bothered to help me move all our bags to and into the car boot... (tools) they were too busy running to the new arrivals cars. Also upon check-in the lady on the desk was very abrupt and seemed quite unfriendly. To sum it up and this excludes the cleaners as they were the only nice members of staff we encountered, the rest are not welcoming or friendly.

ROOMS - we had an ocean view and the veranda and view were really really fantastic. BUT.... on our first night coming into the room late we could here a very loud "BUZZZZ" it was so loud and sounded electrical. We ignored it for a while until we couldn't anymore. So we called up someone to have a look, a maintenance guy came but to our amazement couldn't hear it, it was honestly unbelievable as we stood in the room with him... So going on, he called another one of his buddy's up and surprise he couldn't hear it either, at this point we got rather angry and finally a supervisor came up and within 15 seconds of her being in the room she acknowledged there was a buzzing but assured us there had been no other room complaints and they didn't know where it could possibly be coming from. Long story short we were moved at about 2 in the morning to another room a few floors up which didn't have the "Buzz", the following day we went back down to the "noisy" room to pick up our things that weren't bought up the night before due to how late it was and by chance I wondered a few doors down and found "An electrical cupboard" with a big sign on the door which you could here the same "Buzz" blaring out so loud and clearly..... the fact that the staff whole heatedly stated the room was no where near anything electrical and only supervisors* would acknowledge sounds was a joke.

COMMON AREAS - The visual aspects of the resort were great. From the lobby and lovely grounds that were well kept, it's a very impressive looking hotel and the lobby is particularly attractive.

To conclude, we didn't enjoy the stay and felt angry about the amount we were paying for such bad customer service.

Can't say a bad word about this place other than it's crazy expensive. We took our three boys and they wore themselves out in that pool. We loved the overall ambiance of the property and everything was well kept. The beach was particularly clean. The water wasn't crytstal blue like you'd find in the Caribbean but it was nice. I took the boys on a beach scuba dive through the resort and the guides were great. The kids did the activity center one night which was okay but it's more for the younger set. My 11 year old was not happy. If you're looking to save $$ you can go next door to the shopping centers to stock up and there are plenty of restaurants in the vicinity. We stayed in one of the suites and the room was just fine. Service throughout the resort was top notch. We'd definitely go back.

We feel fortunate to be able to have stayed at this resort. The ambiance is absolutely amazing!! The water features, the landscaped grounds, the pool, the view, etc. are outsanding! We have been to a lot of resorts and never been to one THIS relaxing. You could also stay here and decide to not leave the entire week. Everything is here that you need! Be prepared to pay more than usual for food. For example, lunch or breakfast, will cost two people around $50.00. I purchased a small granola bar and it was $5.00. There is an affordable pizza place across the road there is Tommy Bahamas within walking distance, and there are other eating options in that same outdoor mall. We did hear the concierge may not let you know about other eating options. Also, regarding a previous review, yes, the tile in the bath, may not be perfect, but don't let small things like that, cloud your thinking of this place. Relax and just enjoy being here and the beautiful island, Maui. The housekeeping daily and nightly are superb! They truly go above and beyond other resorts. I view this place as an unforgettable, once in a lifetime or more if you're lucky, dream vacation. Enjoy!

My fiance and I recently stayed at the Grand Wailea in Maui. After struggling to decide which hotel to pick in Maui, I'm very glad we chose this resort. My comments are as follows: PROPERTY - The property is lovely and is situated on a perfect beach area in Maui. The ride is only about 20 minutes from the airport, but it does feel a world away. The Four Seasons and another top resort are next door; thus, you will find the area to feel a bit more high end. This is good and bad. If you are looking for a more "active" party scene or pure "family" area, I don't know that this is it. Rather, the hotel seemed to cater to couples and those seeking a more quiet family experience. Lots of children -- but there was a very nice children's pool and a very nice adult pool. Thus, again, it really was the perfect place for a "calm" family adventure but also a honeymoon. You could find the environment you were looking for pretty easily. HOSPITALITY: As for the friendliness of the staff, everyone was exceedingly helpful. I was very surprised by the overwhelming hospitality -- from the porters to the beach service. Very, very friendly. ROOMS - We were upgraded to the Napua Tower at the hotel (which is basically a hotel within the hotel). The room was clean and beautiful, and the beds were very comfortable. Because we were upgraded free of charge due to a discrepancy with our original room (we had asked for a King bed and one wasn't available), I can't comment on whether the Napua Towers was worth it money-wise as I don't know the potential cost as compared to our original room. However, I can say that the room was stunning, the view was fabulous, and it was very nice getting a complimentary breakfast and a complimentary snack prior to dinner. Again, because the Napua Towers requires a private key behind a gate, you did feel a world away from everyone. Note: Napua Towers is not just for honeymooners; a few people had children staying with them which was just fine. FOOD - Food is expensive in Maui. Period. There is a fridge in the room, however, so it may be wise to stock up on some "basics" and put them in the fridge. Also, there is a little cafeteria type shop in the Wailea Shops within the hotel where you can get a cheaper coffee, bagel, etc. Hence, there are ways to save money if you wish. The restaurants at the hotel were interesting. We only ate at Humuhumu..which was very good. Off-site, we ate at Mama's Fishmarket. It is expensive; it is worth it. Best fish of the whole trip. Best dessert as well. There is beach service at the hotel as well -- with cocktails running around $14/drink. Entrees at the restaurants within the hotel run about $25-$30 dollars a piece and upwards. In terms of high-end eateries, there are plenty at this hotel and the Four Seasons next door. In terms of mid-range eateries, they certainly exist if you have a car. On the way to the hotel, a SaveRite exists. I would recommend stopping there for the basics on Day 1. THINGS TO DO NEAR THE HOTEL: Paia on Maui's North Shore is a beautiful little beach town nearby. Very simple and relaxing. Lahaina, which is also nearby, is also fun -- but a good deal more commercial. The Lahaina Grill is delicious but expensive--worth it. Haleakala (Maui's volcano) is a very fun morning drive. Definitely go before the sun comes up as the views PRIOR to sunrise are extraordinary. It is cold, however, so dress warm -- it's about 33 degrees F. We did not do the bike ride down Haleakala or the Road to Hana as both seemed a little overly hyped so we opted out. When we got to Maui, we talked to a few people who had done the Hana ride. Half loved it; half didn't. We also talked to a few people who did the bike ride -- some loved it; some didn't as you are riding on the main road with cars passing you by....and it's cold. We also did RedLine Rafting for a day of snorkeling. Very nice boat without feeling crushed by the crowd. Very nice Redline team. Plus, they were VERY respectful as to the wildlife (whales) and very mindful of the wildlife under the waters (turtles, fish, coral, etc). So, if you want to enjoy a day of snorkeling which is respectful of the local flora and wildlife, they would be a good team. Finally, if you do not feel like a day off-site, the hotel has an amazing spa. Gorgeous. Definitely worth "staying home" for a day at the spa. BOTTOM LINE: All in all, the hotel was very centrally located with regard to a number of activities. We were very pleased with the accommodations, and we would definitely return to this hotel on Maui. Final Note: The hotel has a large chapel near the beach--which no other review seemed to mention. Perfect location for a wedding or a renewal of vows. It is nondenominational so it should not alienate anybody--although some people (I overheard) found it to be odd. Personally, I thought it was very quaint and looked exceedingly pretty against the beach backdrop. Definitely a nice destination wedding location.

The Grand Wailea delivered. We had mixed expectations heading into the resort deciding the trip was for the kids based on the water slides. But for a property that is 20 years old and plenty of mixed reviews on TripAdivsor it beat our expectations. Our garden view room which had “partial ocean views” was nice, clean and large (“was I upgraded and not informed?”). Yes you could point to a few old things in the room but generally it was in great 4.5 star condition. The water slides at the Grand Wailea are fantastic and we consumed many hours breaking new speed records. Having stayed in Wailea previously it was nice to be able to walk to the restaurants nearby at “The Shops of Wailea” mall in 10 minutes.

Positives: slides, pools, fitness center, fast internet, beach running track, breakfast buffett.

Negatives: Needs a few $$$ spent on the rooms, unhelpful beach staff.

We had our dream wedding at the Grand Wailea on 10-11-12! Paul and I had picked the Grand Wailea because of the beautiful Chapel and Waterfall. It looked like the perfect place to start our lives together and join our four children into one big family. From the moment I first contacted the Grand Wailea everything was so easy. Our wedding coordinator Noelani was such a wonderful person. She made every dream come true. She took care of every detail. The day of the wedding we were floating on air. Everything went perfect! All 12 guests and our family had a wonderful vacation and could not want for anything. It was the perfect place for our wedding and honeymoon. Jerry Grigory photography captured every moment perfectly. Amazing photos! Everything and anything you could want in a vacation. Can’t wait to go back.
