We had a guided tour of Cholula which included a walk through the tunnels under the remains of the pyramid. We also walked to the church on top from where there are stunning views of Popacatepetal volcano. A must if you are staying in Puebla.

This was an easy 2 hour bus trip from Mexico City, Cholula and Puebla were wonderful! The little museum alongside the pyramid entrance was pretty good, but the walk through the tunnels within the pyramid (which looks like a grassy hill) were really incredible, and a bit spooky!
The view from the top of the church is well worth the (rigorous) climb up to the top.

Cholula, on the outskirts of Puebla, is one of the most interesting small cities in Mexico. It was a major religious center at the time of the Conquest. You can read a description of the place in a book (still in print) by Bernal Diaz del Castillo, one of the conquistadores who came with Cortés. The Spanish had most of the native shrines destroyed and built churches at all the temple sites-- they say that there are 365 churches in Cholula. But the Virgen de los Remedios church is the only one I know that sits on top of one of the great pyramids of Mexico. You can go inside the pyramid itself! The archaeological site is expansive, with good signage. I highly recommend using a guide-- he'll point out elements that you shouldn't miss. You can walk up to the church, too-- and maybe buy some roasted grasshoppers on the way.

thi is one of the most important attractions on cholula, you must visit it and watch the great view on the top, also there are several culture attractions near it and also restaurants and bars.

I had been through the pyramid a lot of times with locals who were explaining the history to me, but when I went back my family wanted to get a guide, and it turned out that the locals don't actually know the history as correctly as they think they do!
Climb to the top and take a look, it's amazing how many churches you can see around Puebla from up there.
