“Best choice in Ilulissat”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

An underdog to the Hotel Arctic, after visiting both hotels we thought we made the right choice with Icefjord Hotel. Not only because of the price difference. It has a better location, making it easier to walk around town. We went in low season and got an excellent room with a great view, although i do believe most rooms have great views, and if not the restaurant area is a great place to chill and wave at the passing icebergs. Staff was helpful and relatively pleasant. They were efficient at arranging transport for us. Internet was crazy expensive (I believe Arctic has free terminals), but then you're not there for the connectivity. Food was good, both breakfasts and dinner menus. I would return to this hotel should i come back to Ilulissat.

Room Tip: We had a corner room, from where you can see the icebergs better.

The setting for this hotel is remarkable....the most up front and personal experience one will have day after day at a hotel in Illulisat. The room is comfortable but unpretentious, although a bit over-priced for what you get. Stay on the bay side so you can open your shades each day and see what has happened to the harbor from the night before!
The hotel could do a much better job with black out curtains or shades.
The view from the hotel terrace is totally stimulating. One could sit there all day and learn more about winds, currents, fishing boats, icebergs. The sound one hears is of icebergs melting in the bay.
The restaurant in the hotel is terrific. I think probably the best in Ilulissat, better than Ulo which gets lots of hot press for its trendy offerings.
The breakfast is varied but we always came down late and seem to have missed a few of the offerings.
The bathroom amenities were poor. They could do better for the price. The biggest negative is that their front desk staff's sense of service was poor. There was clearly not a professionally trained staff. Several speak marginal English and when we asked how far the walk to the promontory near the old power plant was. the answer was" I don't know." That answer is totally ridiculous because it turns out the power plant is a 5-8 minute walk. None of them seemed inclined to make any effort on our behalf. I asked one to make a restaurant reservation for us since the rooms did not have phones and we did not have a cell phone. Their response was: "Make it yourself." When we explained why we wanted help, they were willing. If this hotel wants to elevate itself to a really service-oriented position and compete with the Arctic Hotel, it needs to make a special effort to educate its staff.

Room Tip: Choose a second floor room that faces the bay. It costs a bit more but is worth it. That's the r...

I booked a fjord view room on the second floor, and the view was more than I could have hoped for. Keep the 'international' Hotel Arctic, I doubt there is a better aspect from a hotel in Ilulissat (which you also get from the outdoor deck, restaurant and bar.) Most staff were very friendly and pleasant, though they did seem a little understaffed, and I'm glad I wasn't here at a busy time. Room clean, warm and comfy, though I think the use of the term 'Juliette balcony' was a bit of a stretch for what was essentially a doorway with some planks nailed across it.
Enjoyed the bar and restaurant here, and I thought the location was excellent - just a little out of town, which was an interesting ten minute walk away.
BUT... One big gripe... No hot water!!!
This is a 'known' problem at this hotel affecting some, if not most of the rooms, and as they demand payment on arrival here, good luck in getting anyone to do anything about it. And on at least one occasion I did get the older unfriendly reception lady mentioned in previous reviews, so don't expect the inaction to be always tempered by empathy.
So, I had five days here without a hot shower. My advice would be to decline paying anything until you have inspected your room, and everything is working to your satisfaction.
But, if you get too upset about it, just look out across the bay, and feel your anxieties turn into unbridled awe!

Room Tip: I imagine some of the ground floor northern wing rooms may have obstructed views - go for second flo...

Placed in town, but outside of city centre that is less than five minutes' walk away. Nice rooms. Great beer (micro brewey on site). The view of the Diskobay, the icebergs and the icefiord is nothing less than stunning.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms on the first floor.

A charming, cozy well-run hotel. Windows in the ground floor rooms provide a close-up view of the ice in the bay only a few yards away. Just looking out the window every few hours, you will see and entirely different pattern of icebergs.
The striking turquoise hotel building sits among a neighborhood of simple frame dwellings painted in an amazing array of bright colors. The interior is decorated in classic local Ice-blue color themes.Of the three major hotels, the Icefiord is most integrated into the town. By contrast the often higher rated Hotel Arctic (owned by SAS, Air Greenland among others) had the red coloring of a standard luxury hotel and felt more camp-like.

Room Tip: Rooms on the ground floor allow you to experience the bay close-up.

Lovely location overlooking the bay choked with icebergs. We were staying in one of the deluxe rooms on the first floor which was advertised to have a balcony, but the balcony turned out to be a "french balcony" which meant that while you could not sit outdoors with a cup of hot team to enjoy the view, you could always open the door and gaze towards the surreal world outside. The location of Hotel Icefiord is much better than Hotel Arctic, smack in the middle of town. There is a Spar super market within 10 minutes walking from the hotel and the hotel is also very conveniently located for the hike to watch the stranded icebergs that starts at the power station.

The food served in the restaurant was pricey but the reindeer and muskox that we ate were delicious. They had high-chairs in the restaurant which made it convenient for us to feed our baby daughter. Try to come in early for your meals to snag the window side tables looking over the bay. The speed of the wi-fi internet (paid) was miserably slow and it made much more sense to surf the internet from the terminal located close to the stairs next to the entrance of the restaurant.

Greenland is pricey but we loved the city of Ilulissat and Hotel Icefiord and would recommend it to everyone.

Warm staff welcome, incredible view of Disko Bay from the restaurant, good food, recommendations for trips to make a Greenland excursion unforgettable. My room was very comfortable. The taxi pickup was prompt and helpful, making things much easier when i definitely did not know the greenlandic language.
