“Lovely Plaza”
Review of Parque Jose Marti

Ranked #4 of 36 things to do in Cienfuegos

We came to Cienfuegos as part of a Jewish Mission to Cuba. We visited the home the the president of the Jewish community..saw where the community comes together..no Rabbi, no Shul, no Torah..just a home where people gather for festive holiday meals, prayers, etc. That was a fascinating learning experience..then we visited the Jose Marti Plaza, which of course, has a statue of him. The square was surrounded by a government building, stores, and lots of people. There is also a side street that takes you past all kinds of vendors selling Cuban gifts and souvenirs..A nice treat. I think visiting the town and this square was very enlightening and gives you another view of Cuba..away from Havana..

A true heart of Cienfuegos, this plaza is the best place for those who crave more open spaces amongst the crammed streets of the town. Everything is pretty and shiny, courtesy of refurbishment since the historical centre of Cienfuegos has become a UNESCO world herritage site. It's a good meeting spot, all bike/horse taxis will most probably drop you off here and you can go to the museum or take a tour of the theatre. Here you'll find the most beautiful buildings of the town.

There appeared to be a concert in the middle of the plaza. It was so nice to enjoy the beautiful music and see the public dance. A very romantic experience.

Plenty of benches, plenty of shade, plenty of gracious old buildings. A great cafe at the western end, and some very friendly dogs as well! An orchestra pitched up at five o'clock - it looked like everyone had taken their instruments to work - and there was some really super music for a while.
