By Cuban standards it's adequate, by US standards it is not. Shabby rooms, dim lights and only some of them actually work, poor water pressure and limited hot water (think lukewarm trickle showers), and uncomfortable beds only begin to describe the experience. But climb the rickety curved stairway at the adjacent magnificent home up to the roof for a wonderful sunset mojito.

From the outside this is an old ugly concrete building which stands out next to the magnificent palace next door.
Inside though it is not as bad as it first appears. Rooms and the bathroom are a bit shabby, but comfortable enough. The hotel has a bar but for some reason we were not allowed to buy drinks and take them to the bedroom. We wanted to do this as the bar area had no atmosphere at all
The buffet dinner and breakfast was reasonable, albeit a little chaotic.
Decent pool with good views.
We were there for one night as part of a tour and most people seemed to be there only for a short time.

This is a modern hotel in amongst some older buildings and a residential area alongside the waterside. We were allocated a poolside room, which was good. Facilities are OK - fairly basic. Buffet meals were well provided for - a good selection both for breakfast and dinner.

The hotel grounds were enclosed so not allowing much of a stroll. Overall quite satisfactory for a rural stopover.

Hotel is set almost at the end of a peninsular at the end of the main street and looks out onto the bay
Large bedrooms with two double beds, and good bathroom with shower. Bedrooms all face over the pool with balcony but face roughly north, the door to bedrooms is from a long open corridor which faces south. We stayed as part of a tour group, and so we were checked in automatically. Whilst it could do with some upgrading it is furnished largely to a good standard and the food at breakfast and at the buffet evening was also very good. The pool is kept clean and the hotel grounds are nicely kept.

If you keep your expectations real, this is actually a pleasant place to stay. The Jagua is a government-run, medium-sized hotel in a great location. Government-run means there will be problems; in my room, the holder for the shower head was broken, so I had to use it like a shower massage. But the room was clean, the water was hot, and each day I got a sweet personal note from the maid. The views from both my balcony and the balcony outside my door were exceptional: Cienfuegos harbor from the former, the end of the Punta Gorda peninsula from the latter. The lobby is very nice, there are a number of shops (including a fairly good selection of Cuban music), and the bar is open 24 hours, with music most evenings. The coffee sold at the bar is much better than that at the breakfast buffet, which overall is pretty mediocre. Adjacent to the hotel is a replica Moorish castle built by Bautista's brother; it's a classic of what the English would call a "folly" and the rooftop bar is a great place to watch the sunset. The lunch buffet in the garden between the two buildings was very good. Stroll down to the little park at the end of Punta Gorda (a couple hundred meters) for some great views, pleasant atmosphere and excellent mojitos at the cabana bar. Cienfuegos itself is a short walk away, and there are several restaurants in immediate proximity. Not luxurious, but it felt much like authentic Cuba than the other places I stayed, and none of the deficiencies really bothered me.

Room Tip: Rooms toward the back will have better views.
