We stayed 2 nights with the very hospitable Leonor and Armando in their lovely, if somewhat quirky, central city home.
Upon arrival we were greeted with a video showing the highlights of the local area, of which Leonor and Armando are keen ambassadors for. Unless you are planning to spend a day travelling out to the national parks the sights of Cienfuegos could easily be condensed into a single day; although our one and a half days did allow us to spend some time lounging around the Hotel Union pool (across the road).
Their home is decorated with an endless assortment of quirky items including a ‘stuffed tiger’ toy on the piano stool, and a wide variety of cat paraphernalia (to accompany the wide range of cats which live outside)! A rooftop patio is perfect for a drink or just for lovely views across the city.
The rooms are simple, but clean. One limitation is that you only get a key to your room, not to the front door, so you are reliant on your hosts to let you in at night.
Leonor’s Cola-Chicken is her signature dish, however my tip is to ask her to make you one of her Black Cat Mojito’s with the 7 year Havana Club! We even bought some friends home for dinner one night (who were only staying in State hotels) and Leonor was more than happy to set two extra spots at the table and let them sample Casa food.
Leonor and Armando are friendly hosts who are very proud of their town and country. It was a pleasure to stay with them.
