“Very good experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2014

After traveling west from San Juan, we arrived at Hostal Tropical over the weekend and even though it was Saturday night, the town was still very quiet with no real nightlife. Finding the hostel was fairly easy but only because of the Kookie Tire place which showed up on Google and the GPS. Their driveway was a bit narrow for the sedan we were in, but there was plenty of parking as we went in the middle of January. We had booked a private room with a bathroom, online for a great deal, so we weren't expecting to stay at the Hilton. Checking into Hostal Tropical was seamless and informative. The two young employees, Coral and John, were extremely helpful in giving us a variety of interest points around the whole island. Both of the staff members were very inviting. We especially applaud their hospitality as they offered us check out a few more hours past the initial check out time at no charge. The room we stayed in was very simple, and bare, but clean; there was a bed, a couch, a night stand, and a food tray table. Our room was near a light post, so a lot of light flooded through our windows, which bothered us both, so we ended up blocking the windows with the couch seats. The bed itself was a bit stiff, and the bed sheets were thin and a overly dry. The A/C worked very well. The bathroom was small and smelled a bit funky from the chickens and roosters across the way. The shower's temperature gauge was hit or miss, and the toilet would continuously run after being flushed, so we constantly had to adjust the chain in the tank. Eating out definitely requires a car, as you won't find too many taxis around the area of the hostel. It's about a 15-20 minute drive to get to the tourist restaurants but well worth it. There was a Walmart nearby and various fast food establishments, which were very useful in our stay. Despite the minor issues, the ridiculously cheap price for a night makes stopping by Hostel Tropical a no-brainer. We would definitely stay here again if ever in Isabela.

Room Tip: Some private rooms are flooded with light from the parking lot lights

First time experiencing a Hostel and it could have not been any better! Jonathan was very helpful in showing us the places to go while in PR. He was very knowledgable of the island. 2nd time going to PR and this time was the best. There is so much to see on the West Side of the island and you get the rural area rather than touristy feel in San Juan. Rooms were clean and price was great. Convenient parking and location was great. Close to a 24 hrs Wal-mart. Breakfast is included although I did not take advantage of it. I definately will next time. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to save money and experience the beautiful scenery the West Side has to offer. Room was clean and a/c kept the room fresh at night. Recommend renting a car to get around town. 24 hour service is also a great feature. Hostel is also close to highway 2 which will get you anywhere.

Room Tip: If you don't like sharing a bathroom with strangers, I'd suggest requesting the rooms with a...

The town of Isabela is awesome and this hostel makes it even better to visit. Very clean, nice staff, breakfast, easy to get to by driving and a lot of things to do nearby. The rooms are very comfortable.

Unbelievably peaceful faculty. The staff (Jonathan, etc) were amazing, compassionate, intelligent, and beautiful people. They let me use the reception computer when I was in panic mode and needed to look at some last minute flights. The shower was hot and the rooms are big enough. They are the only hostel I've seen in PR that offer breakfast. Make sure you don't drive into the motel first by mistake or you will be a little confused as to what kind of reservation you actually made. Totally recommended for a peaceful stay!

We are glad we were able to calm your panicking, and make your trip accommodate to your needs. We are working in the motel and hostel confusion in the entrance, but it is a good experience to know the definition of a motel in Puerto Rico. We offer breakfast so those who stay can go out and discover Borikén with something in their stomach, thanks for appreciating it. Thanks for being our guest, we are happy you enjoyed.

Driving from SJuan to Mayaguez needed a place, just for sleep with our three kids, called and stayed there. Very clean rooms, great great service and location, close to Num 2 avenue in Isabela. This hostal (shared bathroom) is not usual in PR, but they also have rooms with private baths.
Again, good A/C, clean, cozy, good experience...need to work on the matresses (very firm).

Thanks for stopping by! We are conveniently located very close to Highway PR 2 in Isabela, that is good for a quick stop. Getting comfortable mattresses is one of our goals, our mindset is to always to improve. We also have mixed dorms for the solo travelers on a budget.

Hostal Tropical gets it right when it comes to Hostels. You get that good vibe that everyone there loves to meet new people and want to experience the real Puerto Rico! The hosts, Jonathan and Coralis, are very helpful and will go out of their way to give you good advice on places to visit, where to eat, etc.

Where to start? Hmmmm......
*Location: perfect. The hostel is located right next to the express way and very close to a Walmart, where you can refill what you need for a day trip outside of Isabela.
*Room: We stayed in a 2 full beds with very good prices. Originally we planned to stay for 2 nights but we extended 4 more nights. Plus, they have delicious breakfast every morning :D
*Atmosphere: Excellent. The owners are just NICE! They are like your family, giving you all the information and food :o They are whom you need in a hostel, who can give you the deep insights of the local place. I enjoyed the stay very much. Only wish I speak better Spanish to learn more from them ;)

Room Tip: If you don't like loud music in the early morning, avoid those next to the road. Crazy Puertoriq...
