“Great experience - a few room issues”
Reviewed April 11, 2010

I have travelled to PR more than a dozen times over past 20 years and stayed predominantly down on the west end of the island where Villa Montanas is. My wife, six year old daughter and I stayed there the last week of March and overall had a very enjoyable trip. The grounds are spread out along a beautiful beach. These are 1 and two bedroom freestanding villas. We had a oceanfront unit (1031). There is some snorkling right off the beach if the waves are calm, also surfing and kite boarding is popular there. Part of the beach is sand, part has rocks. My daughter loved the rocky tidal pools at low tide. Staff was very friendly and responsive. Nice playground, two pools. Two tennis clay tennis courts (need some upkeep). Guests were predominantly families with kids. Many of them are unit owners from San Juan. Not the place to find wild nightlife. Beautiful open air restaurant and bar on the oceanfront. Our room did have some minor issues. The toilet valve stuck constantly. Function was OK but it was noisy and wasted a lot of water. Back door lock functioned only from the inside. Bathroom was small and outdated. No blinds in the bedroom so the sun comes blasting through the gauze curtains at about 6:30AM. The restaurant onsite is good and there are several others down the road to the East towards Playa Jobos. Wife gives the masseuse two thumbs up. Overall a very relaxing and enjoyable stay at Villa Montanas. We would definitely return.

I normally don;t write revies, but given that this hotel never responded to my questions and did not honor the offer stated on their website, I felt I had to share. Carlos Luengas (aka manager) never responded my questions and they did not honor the promotion on their website. I let you decide if this is a place that you want to stay ...

The hotel is located on a lovely beach, and the grounds are attractive. Bar and dining area are out of doors, overlooking the Atlantic. But our "cliff" room, which I was told had ocean views, only looked out on treetops--not terrible, but not what I had been told. The real issue was the very nice but completely ineffective management. Staff was always agreeable when asked to provide extra towels etc--but never followed through. The bar was understocked and restaurant service was very slow. One night they neglected to tell guests that the restaurant/bar was off-limits to guests due to a wedding, so we arrived hungry and thirsty, only to be led to a makeshift dining area where there was inadequate staff and a long wait for service. Check-out took forever!

The setting of Villa Montana is pretty terrific. Apparently it was/or is set up for time sharing and the grounds are beautifully kept and very quiet. My husband and I stayed in a room with a queen size bed - nothing special, but clean - on one of the rows behind the ocean view villas. Interestingly, besides the bed, a TV on a stand, a mini fridge, and one lamp on a night stand, there wasn't even a single chair in our room, but plenty of empty floor space. So we brought in two metal chairs and a little side table from the patio out front and it made all the difference in the world. In doing so, it relieved our frustration factor immensely. There are several lounge chairs for guests along the fabulous beach, as well as an open air restaurant that situated a few feet from the waves - really an awesome setting. While it is a bit pricey as other reviewers have mentioned, the thing we liked most was the food which was prepared by Chef Jeremy Cruz. This fellow has won several well deserved awards for his culinary excellence and in our estimation, was ultimately worth every penny and probably reason enough to go to Villa Montana.
If you plan to stay there, I would strongly suggest making a reservation well in advance of your arrival and getting a confirmation number before your arrival. Trust me on this.

The customer service was incredible. The folks at the front desk were amazing in taking care of our needs. We don't expect a perfect week at a perfect resort when we are traveling with our imperfect family. How boring would that be... My son was stung by a sea urchin while snorkeling and the staff acted quickly to soak the wound in vinegar and made numerous attempts to reach 911. The staff informed us that it would be quicker to transport our son by our rental car. The resort event coordinator, Gina Marie left her post and her appointments to escort us to the hospital which was 25 minutes away. She comforted my son during a frightening situation where language was a barrier. The general manager made a point to check in with our family to inquire how our son was faring that evening. Shukura, the front office manager also impressed me. She went above and beyond for our family during the busiest weekend of the season. This is our sixth family trip to the Caribbean and we have never stayed at the Ritz- Carlton but the Villa Montana made us feel like we were staying at the Ritz.
My only wish for Puerto Rico is that folks would take better care of their beaches and their dogs . Way too much trash and broken glass and way too many unneutered and neglected canines.

The hotel is rustic, yet modern, arranged in a easy to get around manner.

The service at the hotel was at times inconsistent. The employees assigned to thefront desk were accomodating and friendly, but more often than not, inundated with handling everything from ringing phones to towels, to reservations.
The room was small, but clean and comfortable.
Beach was very clean & nice sand. However, the pool is located a distance away, hidden near the tennis courts. The fitness center is small, but adequate.

The Eclipse restaurant was located on beach. The menu, as well as the food, was excellent.

There is a very nice (off property sponsored) horseback riding excursion along the beach
as well as excellent snorkling.

I see some comments here about service and i kind of get it but i don't need obseqiuous slavery even at a resort. The staff is friendly and while it may not be danny meyer level they did go out of their way several times to make us feel comfortable. Bar staff, front desk, security everoyone.

The rooms are terrific, beach is great. Resaruant is good not quite great. Not the cheapest but a really good time.

Bottom line i'd go back in a heartbeat. Overall great spot.

tips
- rent a car or motorbike
- get good directions, getting out of the airport is tricky the rest is pretty easy
- go to http://www.ola-lolas.com/ its prety much the best place ever
