A renovation a couple of years ago was a great improvement! A very nice exposed stone wall decor and pleasant atmosphere brings a much needed sense of pride to Napanee. Food is average to a bit better than average - however burgers are especially good. Service is frendly but sadly,, consistently slow. Napanee has very very few eating options that are not truck-stop inspired, so the Loaf & Ale is a refreshing alternative that isn't a formula restuarant or fast food.

We have come here every few months since it opened, normally it is good food with horrible service (slow, relaxed atmosphere). This time we came here and it was obvious they had someone new in the kitchen. We ordered 2pc fish n chips that came under cooked with soggy fries, & sour coleslaw. We also ordered chicken parm and it had noodles that taste like some chef bouardee crap you feed to kids & cheap chicken that tasted like the value bags from Walmart.

We live close to Napanee and have overlooked this gem thinking our small town had little to offer in the way of a memorable dining experience and good food. We learned the error of oversight last Saturday.
Typical pub decor greeted us on arrival as expected. The staff was pleasant and efficient.
The menu is well thought out offering a range of selections. Service was prompt and our drinks arrived quickly.
Wanting to get a good idea about the chef's capabilities our family of three decided on three different entreé's. It took under 15 minutes for the food to arrive.
My steak and mushroom pie was impressive arriving loaded into a extra large Yorkshire pudding. Loaded with mashed potatoes gravy and a generous portion of steak & Mushrooms. Fresh garden veg cooked to perfection on the side. My husbands steak was perfectly medium rare, surprisingly tender and the green peppercorn sauce was wonderful. The fries were fresh, hand cut and crisp. My daughters Chicken Parmesan was a large portion nestled on a well prepared pasta with basic but tasty marinara. Her chicken was thick, tender and juicy. Portions here are actually quite large and prices are well under what we would have expected in a larger city. Overall, a great dining experience. The chef knows what he is doing and does it well.

Service is always slow. Doesn't ever seem to be enough staff working-and every so often one person's drink order in our group is forgotton (but put on the bill). Food is average pub style. I work in Napanee so we are there often and it's the same every time.

have been there 4 times and have walked away each time with mixed feelings. the food everytime has been very good but attempting to get the food is another experience. the first visit they charged me and my wife for two hamburgers and a fish and chips and five beers. we had one burger and one order of fish and chips and three beers. when brought to the waitresses attention she looked at me like I was lying. the second visit we were told to find a table. we found a table but apparently the wait staff wasn't aware that this table was in the restaurant. the third time the waitress reminded me of a chicken with its head cut off. she was running around and not doing anything. the last time, and I do mean last, it has become quite obvious that unless your a regular at the Loaf and Ale service will eventually come after the socialization with the regulars has been complete. I'll stick to Shoeless Joe's. It may be a chain restaurant but the food is always consistent and the service is always great! From a life long Napanee resident.
