“Do not stay here”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2009

My husband and I searched for the perfect place to spend our 3rd wedding anniversary. From the website (which is flashy, but not representative), and a recommendation from a friend (who stayed years ago), we were so excited about our weekend. We arrived and you didn't even have to scratch the surface to see that the inn has seen better days. Our room (a country room in the Mill) was extremely dated, nasty stains on the carpet, and overall unclean. We complained, and we were shown the "cottage" which wasn't much better. We CANCELED, TURNED AROUND and drove the TWO HOURS home! We are not ones to usually complain, we felt DUPED, GRUMPY and our anniversary spoiled. Seriously, do not stay here!!!!

I'm sorry to read of your disappointment with your stay last month. Most of the five buildings on our property containing guest rooms & suites are more than a century old and feature antiques and artifacts from the days of woollen and grist mill operations. Many guests share our appreciation of the historic value. I acknowledge that we have some carpet issues which need to be attended to and we now have a plan in place to address these. Thank you for providing your comments. I hope that you will provide us with an opportunity to have you as our guests in future.

Located in a beautiful location among babbling streams - the renovated mill seems like it should be a wonderful inn. Unfortunately that was not our experience.

The facility feels tired, and the staff - especially at the front desk - seem uninterested in going out of their way to ensure great experiences by their guests.

The multiple special "package" pricing just seemed complicated and a bunch of fine print - leading to a feeling of not trusting we were getting a fair value.

A wrong charge ended up on our bill, so check you final bill carefully.

A huge room! Outstanding surroundings. A good breakfast buffet.

Okay, now the actual review. The Inn may have seen better days. Our room, although large, was certainly not "posh". The bathroom was very small, considering the size of the room. Our air conditioner, which we needed to keep on, even though the evening air was cool, was very noisy. Our bathroom wall, backed onto the same wall that housed th e ice maker and vending machines. Both of these kept the bathroom more than warm. The rug in front of our bed had an upturned corner that, not only I, but the turn down personnel tripped over.

On our first night, we had mistakenly put the wrong side of the "do not disturb" sign on the handle to read "Please make up our room". At the knock on the door (I was already awake), I answered the door, looked at the sign, said "Sorry" and asked if they could come back. Never to be seen again. Our room never was made up that whole day, even though we had changed the sign once we left the room (at approximately 10) and didn't come back until 9:30 that night. Certainly not the service I would expect from the reputation of this Inn.

I doubt I would return.

We stayed one night in the Sharpe Retreat Cottage. We found the accomodations were lacking. The tub drain in one of the bathrooms was clogged and didn't drain and also, one of the toilets in the same bathroom didn't work. Luckily however, there were two other bathrooms in the cottage for us to use. The kitchen was quite dirty and poorly stocked with ammenities and the roof-top/back-yard patios were extremely filty. It looked as if they had not been cleaned in weeks. The berooms were quite nice and the beds very comfortable to sleep in.

We actually arrived a bit early and check-in was at 3:00 p.m., therfore we were told the reception staff would call us on our cell phones when our rooms were ready. We waited and waited, but, never received any calls.

It states in the Inn's website that the Ivey Dinning Room is winner of the CAA Four Diamond Award for the 6th consecutive year, however, this couldn't be further from the truth. The food was poorly presented and quite bland -- there was nothing unique about it. We have been travelling for many years now and have gone to many 4 diamond restaurants, but, The Ivey Dinning Room was a disappointment. For instance, I ordered the seafood cocktail appetizer with dinner, which cost $16. There were only 2 shrimp (not jumbo-sized), one tiny lobster claw on the plate with no scallops to speak of -- I finished the appetizer in only 4 bites. My three friend with which I had dinner all felt the same way about their appetizers/entrees. The desserts, however were very tasteful. The service was good.

The Spa is also sub-standard. There is a cramped reception area with only room for 4 people to sit down. There are no lockers, no robes, no slippers and no health forms/registration/paper-work that needs to be completed upon check-in. Furthermore, there is no lounge/rest area in which to relax before/after one's scheduled treatments. The pool area is dirty and dated and in real need of rennovation. Also, no towels were provided in the pool area either. Extremely inconvenient. The spa staff however were friendly.

My wife and I went to the Benmiller for our 10th wedding anniversary. Our stay very much met our expectations.

Overall, the grounds are beautiful. Our room overlooked the river and our small balcony was a great place to read an enjoy a glass of wine. The room was were very clean and well appointed. A little older yes and a few details were in need of some repair but the bed and sheets were excellent. The stairwells had some musty smell to them but our room did not at all. All in all, just fine for our needs and what I expected from an establishment that has been around for many years.

We used the pool and hottub which were both great and in very good shape despite being around for many years. They also overlooked the Maitland River which was a great view.

We had a fabulous dinner on the Pleaser package which had a limited menu at a better price but the options were excellent with good variety. The food was tremendous. I really liked the focus on Ontario wines and supporting local produce. Our table overlooked the brook and the chairs were the most comfortable I have had a restaurant in ages....we sat back after dinner like it was our living room and chatted.

The trail nearby made for a great morning run. The buffet breakfast was not remarkable but was very good.

All in all we had a great time and felt we got good value for our stay. Nearby Goderich and Lake Huron were also great places to look around.

We went to Benmiller to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday.

When we arrived, we were greeted by 2 very friendly ladies and check in was effortless. We stayed in the Ivey Room and were extremely pleased with it. The only improvement would be to have a CD player in the room (we forgot our ipod for the docking station). We totally enjoyed the balcony and expanse of the room itself.
Our dining experience was awesome. Scott remembered us from a previous visit and it just got better from there. We both had steaks that were cooked to perfection. We paired it with a really nice Cab/Sauv ( thanks for the recommendation Scott).
The atmosphere was great! Matt Hussey's music being piped in really added to the experience. After dinner, we went into the lounge to listen and dance to Matt playing.
On the way back to our great room, Randy commented that it was in his top 3 of great birthdays.
We've decided this will be our future celebration place. If you want a nice place to stay, with a full spa, hiking trails and awesome food and service, Benmiller Inn should be your first choice!

This is a quaint little inn hidden in the woods besides a rushing Ontario river. Large but cozy room with a beautiful king sized bed and french doors that open to the river that runs right beside you. Excellent food and excellent service. True sense of history is evident in the little touches like former mill machinery used as furnishings and decorations througout. Don't miss the hot tub after dinner. Breakfast is included with the regular rates and is not to be missed. Recommend you upgrade to the basic dinner package for the best rate. Free wifi in the room worked very well. Only recommendation to the inn is that they mark the hiking trail a little better or provide maps. We found the start near the restaurant and ended up in someone's driveway! We still had enjoyed our walk nonetheless!
A true gem.

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide your wonderful feedback about our Inn. It truly IS a magical place, and the team and I feel so blessed to enjoy it everyday. I have no idea how I stay so slight as the Flourless Chocolate Cake is amazing (thank you Chef Jeffery!). If you liked it in the spring, you should see the fall colours!

Cheers!
