It seems like there were 2 minds designing this, or they ran into financial issues. Some aspects are Finest Inn quality, and others are not. i.e. the rooms have great high ceiliings, great vanity, wonderful bed, great shower but then the toilet is squeezed in at the door...you have to squeeze between the shower and the toilet to open/close the door. The floors are laminate, the woodwork is plastic/vinyl. The fireplace looks lovely, but we could not get it to work so either too technical for us to figure out, or broken. Rooms are said to be riverview, but only through a couple of trees, and river is not even accessible for a walk or sit. Room doors seem thin or something because sounds in corridor were as loud as being in your room itself. Room service stops at 8:30 pm, and only casual Bistro on premises. Just not up to snuff for a Finest Inn.

Room Tip: River view for sure, as other side of 'motel style corridor' rooms open onto the parking lot.

I'm sorry that we didn't meet your expectations. We have a great working relationship with Thyme on 21 fine dining where we always are happy to make reservations for those preferring a finer dining experience. Our Bistro serves wonderful, house made, but simple fare and our menus are on our website so those booking can view it. Our culinary adventure package includes a dinner at Thyme on 21 as well. The river is very accessible just a few yards from the riverside rooms. There is a large, well mown path leading to the river and connecting with several wonderful trails.

Once again, we made our traditional trip to Goderich for the weekend. We always stay in the School house room! Beautiful! A little pricy, but it's actually good vaule if you have another couple to split it with. The bedrooms are separate and well spaced apart. This year they installed a gazebo which give the deck some much needed shade. We love this room as it allows to to entertain some friends who we stay with on the Saturday night. This hotel is 3-5 mins from the square depending on your speed:). Very clean, very contempory, and very comfortable. We were one of the last groups to make it down to breakfast, but there was still ample variety. Kim (i think) took great care of us! Thanks again Samuels. See you next year.

So glad you enjoyed your stay once again! It's always great to host you. I'm glad you enjoyed the gazebo. It was a much needed addition to the School House Suite. Thank you for taking the time to write a review. It's much appreciated.

We stayed in Samuels for a few days. Yes, I agree with others who have given a review for this hotel that the decor is modern and very nice. The room was nice and clean when we arrived. I also liked their balcony.

Now for the bad stuff. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere. It's not in Goderich but beside Goderich. It's amongst some houses and close to a highway. You'd have to drive a bit to get to anywhere you'd want to go in the town. When we arrived, we were asked to pay upfront and we were asked if we'd like to leave a tip. We found this to be so bizarre that we were being asked for a tip upfront.

We stayed in a so called 'riverside room' however, we could not see the river. It was not right beside the hotel and the view was blocked by the trees. Although the room was nice, the water coming out of the tap had a strange smell, as if it smelled like the river. We noticed it the most when we used the jacuzzi. Not pleasant.

The continental breakfast was the same thing every morning. There were some cut up fruits served one day but they were old and tasted awful. The breakfast is setup in the main entrance of the hotel, outside of the dining area. I found that the front desk person kept looking to see how much food we'd put in our plate which made us feel uncomfortable.

I thought that our stay at Samuels was okay but not amazing by any means. The biggest reason was that we paid $190/night hoping for a great experience but we came out feeling like it was not worth the money.

Room Tip: The riverside room is quieter as the other side faces the street and the parking lot. Your balcony area would actually pretty much be in the parking lot. No privacy.

I'm glad you liked our decor and scored us high on both cleanliness and service. We are always very upfront with guests who ask our location, which is a 2 minute drive into town. I can assure you that our staff welcomes everyone to enjoy as much of the breakfast buffet as they like and, of course, for those preferring a hot breakfast the omelets, waffles, crepes and other hot breakfast items are always available for an additional charge. Our payment machine has a tip button on it because we have restaurant service. We use the same machine for all payments and guests are expected to click no on the tip option when paying for their room. Tipping is always an option for good service, it's never, ever an expectation of our guests.

Beautiful room, we had king riverside view and we loved it! Bed was so comfortable and the fireplace made it very cozy. Not too far from town square or the beach, and amenities are close by also. Would stay again if in the area.
Kim, at the front desk was more than helpful and very friendly...pleasant stay and we recommend it :)

Room Tip: Try to book riverside view!

Although it's located a bit away from the main streets of Goderich, Samuels Hotel is a great place to stay. The renovations to the property have been marvelous, and the rooms are clean, modern, and comfortable. But the best part is the restaurant. Forget the free breakfast and order from the menu. Or give the restaurant a chance at a different time of day. If you need some exercise, walk down the street, cross the highway, and walk along the Tiger Dunlop trail. The view from the old railway bridge is fantastic. A great place to stay!
