“Great breakfast after a night in the ferry”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

Found Philip's cafe by mistake on the road to St John's.
The owner is passionate with his food and made a great breakfast.
The coffee was strong as i like it.
Wait to get out of the ferry to have your breakfast, it is better and cheaper.

“A Must Stop Before Heading on the Ferry”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

This cafe has excellent food, a friendly staff, and a wonderfly comfy atmosphere. They offer delux soups, sandwiches, and salads along with excellent baked goods and I think the BEST cup of coffee I ever had!
This spot also offers wifi so when my ferry out of neighboring Argentia was delayed, my friends and I were able to enjoy food, drink, and surf the web.
This cafe also offers vegetarian/vegan options which was great for me.

“An oasis in the middle of fish and chips”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

Wonderful food. Friendly staff. The smells in the cafe were from baking and fresh coffee. We both had the big breakfast which consisted of homemade bread toasted, eggs, and baked ham. The pastries looked delicious and the coffee was great. They were interested in how a couple from Kentucky decided to vacation in NF.
Frankly I have not found good food in NF but this is an exception. By the way one of the owners speaks French as did several of the customers.

“Welcome stop on long drive.”
Reviewed August 22, 2012

Stopped during a long drive through NL. I had the asparagus and garlic quiche and it was the best quiche I have ever tasted! Staff was friendly, the customers were also friendly (it is NL after all). Great coffee too!

“Best. Breakfast. Sandwich.”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

Arrrrh! Placentia has a history as a haven for pirates and privateers. Philip, the personable owner/chef/raconteur, has taken this to heart with his (trademarked) motto "Surrender to Your Cravings". He often sports a pirate cap while cooking, and celebrates ITLAP Day every September 19th. But the food is why you go to Philip's Café, which is open for breakfast and lunch (and perhaps weekend dinner in the future). It's grrrreat!

We had breakfast there twice, while staying at the nearby Rosedale B&B managed by his partner Linda. Philip takes great pride in his cooking, using the freshest ingredients. His breakfast sandwich is the best I've ever had. Try it with the molasses & raisin bread. Seems like an unusual combo, but it is very tasty. He makes the bread. He bakes the ham, using his Gran's secret family recipe. He'd probably raise chickens and use their eggs if he could (but Placentia municipal ordinances no doubt prohibit chicken coops in town).

Coffee beverages (lattes, espressos, etc) are excellent.

The Café is pleasantly decorated, has outdoor seating available and overlooks the harbor. Free WiFi is available, for those inclined to stare at an iPad instead of enjoying the view.
