Owner description: N 1858, Frederick Stanton built the home of his dreams for his family on his new property - an entire city block of Natchez, Mississippi. The city block cost about $1,550. The house cost over $83,000 before it was even furnished. Carrera Marble, mahogany doors 2 1/2 inches thick, candeliers from France, and Italian statuary appointed the interior. Huge Corinthian columns and granite steps adorned the facade. Stanton came to America with his brothers in 1815. He made a fortune as a cotton broker, then as owner of more than 16,000 acres of cotton plantations. Ironically, he lived only one month after his dream home was finished. ...Now inside view of the Carriage House Restaurant Stanton Hall housed a college for young ladies for a short time, then fell into dissarray to some extent before the Pilgrimage Garden Club renewed the antebellum mansion to much of its former glory. It stands today, filled with original and like antique furnishings as Frederick originally created it, a showcase for the world to see. Daily tours are given of the home, and during Spring and Fall Pilgrimages hostesses dress in antebellum costume to greet the throngs of visitors. After the tour, many stop to have lunch at the adjacent Carriage House Restaurant, which is nationally famous for its fine Southern cuisine. Stanton Hall is listed as an official National Historic Landmark.

Beautiful house. I was a little disappointed that the Carriage Restaurant was closed for construction . Our tour guide was good.

“Classic antibellum mansion”
Reviewed January 22, 2014

Beautiful home. Very impressive inside and out. Parts of the site weren't on the tour and we'd have liked to see everything. Easy to take yourself back in time to envision what life was like in this home. House was used in the filming of "The North and South" miniseries. Interesting tour.

“Impressive Southern Wealth”
Reviewed January 21, 2014

Enjoyed our "private" tour as the weather was exceptionally crisp and it was a weekday. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable and answered all our questions. The family history was interesting and the furniture was impressive. Definitely worth the time but if you have asthma, stay out of the strong potpourri that drenches the gift shop. I loved the tour but after one minute in the gift shop I left with a headache!

“Don't miss this one.”
Reviewed January 15, 2014

For fans of North and South, this is a must-see. Interiors scenes of this movie were filmed here and I can certainly see why. The columns alone make this a majestic home. Lots of interesting family history as well which makes it come to life.

“Beautiful ”

This house was very beautiful! Our guide was very informative. The only thing that made me not make this a 5 was the gift shop smelled of very strong potpourri. It is over powering and left me with a headache.
