Recommended length of visit: <1 hour
Owner description: Recognized as an architectural masterpiece among Catholic churches in the south, it is the spiritual home of a vibrant St. Mary Catholic community today. The construction of this place of worship was begun in 1842 as the Cathedral of the newly established Diocese of Natchez. The St. Mary congregation takes pride in the basilica's colorful and prayerful setting, and welcomes visitors from near and distant places. The city of Natchez, on the Mississippi River and the birthplace of Mississippi, is a tourist destination because of its historic ante-bellum homes. St. Mary Basilica, also ante-bellum, is the city's central landmark.

St. Mary Basilica is simply beautiful since its restoration. The ornate marble carvings, beautiful statues, and stained glass windows are breathtaking.

“Beautiful Cathedral”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

Just stopped in for some quiet time on a hot summer day. What a jewel! Check out the brochure in the vestibule which describes each window, etc.

“Vigil Mass in Grandeur”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

We attended 5 pm Vigil Mass. The fabulous sculptures and artwork, architectural details and beautiful organ set the stage for the fill-in Dominican priest to weave in extra patron saints, brief meditations and local announcements. The service lasted 1 1/2 hours, longer than we're accustomed to for Vigil Mass, but, here in this beautiful setting designed toward the glorification of God, it seemed somehow apropos.

A must see if your in the area. The craftsmanship is remarkable and a delight. The stain glass windows are beautiful. There really is a small confederate park just behind the church with a gorgeous fountain.

I actually visited this church in the mid 90's. Its breath taking. We were just peeking in from the outside during a service and someone invited us in to sit. You could hardly pay attention to what was going on for peering up at all the beautiful architecture and ceiling decor. The Basilica has a beautiful courtyard in the back with goldfish fountains. If you are down town take a walk to this church..... I was down this June 2013 and decided to revisit. Didn't go inside but the outside is still the same.....
