Owner description: Emerald Mound is the second-largest Indian mound in America.

Not to be missed on the Natchez Trace journey, Emerald Mound is only a few minutes off the main road a few miles North of Natchez, MS.. Even though the mound has print narrative on site, it is best to review the history of the Mound Building societies of North America, including the geographic magnitude across mid-America as far West as Oklahoma and Texas. Standing before this mound is a visual reminder of the size and significance of the mounds in their culture.

It is much bigger than it looks in the pictures and you are welcome to climb it. (There are stairs.) That said, it is not something special. And I am Native American myself, so I totally understand the significance and importance of Indian mounds. Just being honest, you should not skip it, but do not expect to spend a lot of time here. Climb it, admire the gorgeous view, appreciate it, photograph it, and then continue your trip.

So many chiefs and no Indians. Interesting history but nothing about the astronomical significance here

The Trace is one of my favorite places to go. So much history and not an 18 wheeler in sight!!! We decided to visit Emerald Mound and found it to be very peaceful. We accepted the invitation to go to the top and had quite a discussion about Native American culture with our 10 year old grandson. He was so fascinated with the place he asked us to take him back again the next day where we did a little more exploring. Sometimes you just have to stop the world and try to imagine what it was like to live 1000 or more years ago. We have also been to the Cahokia Mound site where the largest mound is located, along with many in Ohio, learning more about the people who came before us.
