After touring several Antibellum mansions in Natchez, it was a nice change to see where a local business man lived. William Johnson was a freed slave who succeeded as a barber and prospered to such an extent that he owned slaves himself. His life story is very interesting. Make a point to stop here. Oh, and this one is free!

Great National Park Service interpretation at both sites. Johnston has great exhibits and Melrose great ranger tours.

I am in awe of the difficulty of the site and the significance of the encounter. The area roads were well laid out. The park service is at work clearing more trees to present a better approximation of the appearance during the battle.

Melrose is one of the nicer and more complete homes. Its currently under renovation, but holds original flooring, blinds and furnishings. The park rangers are a bit more balanced in their presentation of the material during the tours and really worked to put the era in full historical perspective. If you are only going to do the 3 house tour - this should be on your list. Unlike most of the other homes, the slave quarters are also open and have a meaningful exhibit.

The combined visitors center was excellent. Loved the displays and the giant 3-d map of the city. Reviewed Melrose separately. (Also Excellent). Was very moved by the story of WIlliam Johnson, barber of Natchez. Visiting his home and discovering his story added a new dimension to the whole Natchez experience.
